MBMAX Introduction MBMAX menu, tool bar and line selector. Survey’s Done, Now What? Need to apply Tide and Sound Velocity corrections. Adjust offsets if necessary. Remove fliers from support sensors (GPS for example). Remove all multibeam flyers. But keep all the good points! Save to Edited format file when done. Re-edit if needed. Read Parameters A Lot Going On Here… Selections: Select devices. Option to load Sidescan to aid editing. Device Info: Change offsets if necessary. Survey Info: Some settings and information from the survey file. Presort: Simple data thinning removes % of sweeps. GPS Pre-Filter: Either Position or RTK Tides. Filters based on GPS Mode values, # of satellites, HDOP, and/or speed. Advanced Read Parameters RTK Tides: Selections to avoid double correction. Correct for Induced Heave: If MRU is not at boat CG. Remove Heave Drift: Averaging method nullifies drift. Adjust SV Profile…: Replace top of profile with sensor reading at the head. Ray Tracing: Select Line or Arc method or let MBMAX decide based on profile depth and sampling. Pat asked to note difference from SB Presort. Check that devices are working – no flat lines. Check for heave drift. Edit Position data in track lines. (Block or Single point.) Use mouse wheel to zoom, right click to pan. Edit RTK tides. SV Interpolation Option to Load Multiple SV Profiles Select multiple VEL files. Enter cast times. Limit of 48 VEL files. SV profile is interpolated for each ping. (Based on ping time, not location.) SVP Extension Goal: A reasonable profile beyond the reach of an ocean cast. Based on a model of Temperature, Pressure and Salinity. Salinity is relatively constant. Decreasing SV to 1000 meters (decreasing temperature). Increasing SV below 1000 meters (increasing pressure). Adjustment Tools Data Adjustment in MBMAX Tide Adjustment, Centerline Method Interpolates the Tide based on the Time and Position of every data point, from the Tide Files of every Gage, at their stationing along the centerline. Tide Adjustment, 3 Point Method: Planar tide interpolation from 3 stations. Heave Adjustment (Delayed Heave), POS/MV and F180: Applies Post-processed Heave from files logged by the inertial system Works great! POSPac Adjustments: Applies corrected position, heave, pitch, roll, heading, and Tide from POSPac *.OUT files. Example: Heave Adjustment Open file containing Post-processed (delayed) Heave. Enter hour difference, local minus UTC time. Click Adjust to finish. Verify it worked by comparing the heave graph before and after adjustment. 18 4/16/2017 HYPACK® Multibeam Training Seminar 18

More Adjustment Tools POSPac Adjustments: Applies corrected Position, Pitch, Roll, Heading, and Tide from POSPac *.OUT files. Option to recalculate RTK tides (below). HYPACK RAW File Adjustments: Replace positions with GPS data recorded to the RAW file. Phase 2 – Swath Editing Another Line by Line Review Transition Phase 1 to 2: “Convert Raw to Corrected” in File menu. Use Filters to remove gross errors. Filters Search and Filter Settings Spike: Removes points deviating from average depth (5 soundings). Quality: Filters based on sonar quality code. Intensity: Filters based on beam intensity value. Overhang: Looks for overhang pattern in sweep profile, and removes it. Works great! Safe unless you’re trying to sound underneath rocks. Use HYSWEEP® Survey Limits: Filter based on settings used at survey time. Savitsky-Golay: Low pass filter based on curve fitting. Low to High: Avoids removing good points. Doesn’t always work. Sometimes removes entire sweeps! Gate Size: Allowable distance from curve. Order: Flexibility of curve. Order 2 = straight line. Window Size: Number of soundings used in curve fit. Important !! 23 Sound Velocity Adjustments
Depth profile from a single sweep: Try to flatten it out. (Works best in flat areas) Important Assumption: Sound Velocity from the sensor at the sonar head is correct. Something needs to be right! Example 1: Moving Salt Water Wedge Before: Bottom curvature is clear – the ‘smiley’ face. Action: Block out the salt water wedge and shift it downward (Down Button). Tide’s going out. Example 2: Missing SV Profile Before: Very poor depth data without a sound velocity profile. Action: Use New Profile option. Experiment with Gradient until the bottom flattens out. Sweep Windows Graphical Review and Manual Editing Two windows, each with it’s own zoom level and perspective. Zoom, rotate and pan to see and ‘get at’ difficult points. Eraser, Block and Line Editing tools. 1,000 levels of Undo. Fast Edit Mode for block and line tools. Yellow X = points outside filter limits. View and Edit Options Sweep Tab Display Style Wiggle, Dot and TIN methods use standard Windows® graphics. Enhanced Sweep Graphics mode supports pan / rotate / zoom and requires OpenGL. Edit Mode (for Block and Line delete) Default: Points are selected but not removed until the delete tool (inside/outside block or above/below line) is pressed. Fast: The delete tool is pre-selected and points are removed as soon as the mouse button is released. Hence 1,000 levels of Undo! Block/Default mode. Click inside or outside button to delete. Block/Fast mode with delete inside pre-selected. Line/Default mode. Click above or below button to delete. More Editing Tools F5: Marks a Target. Undelete Block: Restores deleted points. Point Flag: Flags a questionable sounding for examination in Phase 3. Sidescan: Shows the sidescan record to assist editing. If it shows up on sidescan, don’t delete it. Hand: Toggles Rotate/Pan Mode on/off Rotate/Pan On: Mouse pointer is a hand. Left-Click Mouse Rotates and Tilts the display. Right-Click Mouse Drags and Pans the display. Rotate/Pan Off: Mouse pointer is an arrow. Left-Click Mouse drag places an edit block or line on the display. Point Flag helps you locate a point later. Sidescan record. All Lines Combined (Overlapping Perspective) Transition Phase 2 to 3: “Area Based Editing” in File menu. Soundings are grouped in Matrix cells for statistics and display. 30 Matrix Options Transition to Phase 3 Use existing HYPACK® MTX file or,
Auto-Size to data. Very convenient. Option to Rotate to Survey Line is useful as profiles will cut across the channel. Cell Size: Auto Cell Size determines best fit, about 25 soundings per cell. Editing Windows Profile Window Survey cross section. Color coding by survey line makes it easy to compare overlap. Survey Window Overview of the entire survey. 3-D zoom, pan, tilt and rotate to help ‘interpret’ the soundings and select areas of interest. View depths or statistics. Search and Filter Options Select a statistic to represent each cell. (Median works well.) Select limits above and below. Then: Filter. Be careful not to over-filter. Search. Save Your Work Choose a File Format HS2: For additional editing (MBMAX, CUBE, Cloud). For export (e.g., Fledermaus). You should always SAVE to this Format XYZ: For export and additional processing (e.g., TIN Model). XYZ, Intensity: For intensity mapping. GSF: Generic Sensor Format. For Geocoder. XYZ Reduction Save one XYZ point per cell. Select survey depths (by type) or statistics. Save at any time during an edit session.
