2. The History of Bennington Bennington was the first of many counties charted by the New Hampshire grants. It was charted on January 3, 1749 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth. The town was named after Benning in his honor. This town was granted to William Williams and 61 other men all from New Hampshire. The town had it first settlement in 1761 by 6 couples from Massachusetts. One of which was Capt. Samuel Robinson who had returned from the French and Indian war. Bennington is mainly known for the battle of Bennington which actually took place in New York but near the Bennington border. The battle took place during the revolutionary war with Britain and was won by Gen. John Stark and Ethan Allen’s Green Mountain Boys. There is now a battle monument where once there was an outpost for guns and ammo and now it is a monument for all of the men that gave their lives that day. Today Bennington is thriving with many small businesses. 4. Everett Mansion Edward Everett was a business man that bought the land the house was built on in 1910. He was a bottle salesman that built the home as a summer home for his wife and himself. The Everett Mansion was first constructed in 1911 and it was finished in 1914 the building was built to look like English/Norman Feudal Mansions in the 14 th century. The mansion was designed by George Totten of Washington D.C. The estate cost almost 2 million dollars and included 500 acres. The house had 27 rooms and all of the materials where imported. The house functioned as a summer home but after the death of Edward his wife used it as their permanent residence until the home was sold to the order of the holt cross. In 1974 they sold the home to the St. Joseph college, which is now southern Vermont college, which still uses the building today for plays and other shows. http://www.svc.edu/history/index.html

10. Sacred Heart Church The Bennington mission started in 1837 but the church was not built until August of 1854 and was blessed by Louis Degoesbriand and was the first Catholic church in Vermont. The church served as a place for many mining and textile workers to worship because many workers were immigrants from Ireland and other countries so they needed to worship to keep their faith in the new country. The church is still used today and many followers practice there every Sunday. 16. Old First Church The old first church was actually called the First congregational church of Bennington. This church was designed by Lavius Fillmore and was built in 1805. The church preaches the Protestant religion that started in 1762. In 1937 it was renamed Vermont's colonial shrine and was remolded and it got a new altar. 22. Park-McCullough The Park-McCallough house is a victorian mansion built from 1864-65 by attorney and entrepreneur Trenor Park. The house was designed by Henry Dudley. It takes many features of a Romantic Revival style which was popular of the time. At the time of Trenors death his daughter and her husband John G. McCullough took it over. They did major renovations to the house in 1889 to impress the president. The house includes a playhouse, barn, and gardens. http://www.parkmccullough.org/history.html
