1 Global Biomedical Service Program A Service Learning Internship Program for Undergraduates Penn Engineering and Hong Kong Polytechnic University Yangjiang, China

2 What is GBS? Partnership between SEAS, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU), and local clinics in China International service learning program to build orthotics for children with neuromuscular disorders

3 What is GBS? Earn two credits that count toward your degree – Social Science and Humanities Elective (EAS 296) – Technical Elective (EAS 297)

4 What will I get from GBS? – Actually make something with your two hands – Become immersed in Chinese culture – Develop your global citizenship – Learn about international health care and disability- services

5 What does GBS involve? 8 weeks of pre-program preparation at Penn – Chinese culture and history – Prostheses and orthoses fabrication, rehabilitation engineering, anatomy, and gait biomechanics ~2 week program on the campus of HKPU and at a local health center in China

6 Where does GBS take place? Yangjiang Hong Kong

8 Who is Eligible? Any undergraduate at Penn! Must be in good academic standing and demonstrate an interest in international development and service learning Must be available for 8-week preparatory class and 2-week summer program

9 Timeline Dec 21, 2011 - Application Early Deadline Jan 17-Jan 20, 2012- Interviews Evening classes February –April 2012 In-country program: May 19-June 6, 2012* *Tentative dates, subject to change

10 Program Fee Program Fee: *$6,800 – includes tuition, visa/passport processing fees, international airfare, lodging and meals, program- related transportation, and all organized excursions Additional $500-$800 for immunizations and international health insurance Possibility that financial aid will be extended to cover a portion of this fee, depending on the student’s aid package details *2012 estimate, subject to change
