3 I NTRODUCTION Internet is a global network of computers linked together over large distances. Internet is a valuable source of information for students looking for ideas for projects and assignments. It allows students to broaden their academic experience, access important information and communicate to other within academic community.

4 Internet is also widely used by students for entertainment, communication and other purposes. Watching streaming video, online chatting, online gaming, reading latest news, checking e-mail and etc. Students experience significant academic problems as they misuse internet. Students have difficulty completing homework assignments, having enough sleep, studying for exam, or less exercise.

5 RESEARCH JUSTIFICATION Supporters of educational technology believe that internet will make a difference in academic achievement (Foltos,2002). There has been indication that some on-line users are becoming addicted to the internet which may result in academic failure (Brady,1996). Reports from University of Botswana Library state that students are not using the internet for academic purposes. Thus, our research can reveal the effect of internet on the academic performances of biomedical sciences students.

6 Assessing the positive impact - ‘An evaluation of the impact of Internet browsing on students’ academic performance at the tertiary level of education in Nigeria’ by O. Osunade (2003) To evaluate the Internet as a knowledge acquisition tool and its impact on academic performance of students The implication of internet toward academic performance in this study is positive-posttest results for the test group after internet access was significantly better than that of the control group. LITERATURE REVIEW

7 Robert W. Kubey et. al(2001) -“Internet Use and Collegiate Academic Performance Decreasements”. Survey was administered to 576 students at Rutgers University. 14 % of the total sample hurt occasionally, frequently, or very frequently due to Internet use. Academically impaired sub group (N = 80), 40% - Internet use had kept them stay up late at night frequently or very frequently 42.5% -sometimes felt tired the next day due to their Internet use; 20% -occasionally, frequently, or very frequently missed class because of their Internet use. This result indicates that academic performance might be impaired by heavier use of the Internet thus more to the negative impact.

9 GENERAL OBJECTIVE To study the relationship between weekly duration of internet browsing with the academic achievement of first, second and third year Biomedical students session 2008/2009.

10 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE To compare weekly duration of internet browsing based on demography factors. To find association between weekly duration of internet browsing and CGPA. 14 METHODOLOGY

15 BACKGROUND Research conducted in UKM KKL branch involving FSKB Respondents involved are first, second and third year undergraduate students from Biomedical Sciences Department. Our group consist of 15 Biomedical Sciences third year students. Research conducted in UKM KKL branch involving FSKB Respondents involved are first, second and third year undergraduate students from Biomedical Sciences Department. Our group consist of 15 Biomedical Sciences third year students. RESEARCH DESIGN Research design that involved is cross sectional study. Our group use questionnaire for survey research.

16 SAMPLING METHODS Target Population Undergraduate students of 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd years from Biomedical Science Department. Sampel Population Sampling method = Stratified random sampling. Undergraduate student in the sampling frame are divided into stratum according to the years. In each stratum, systematic random sampling is used. The total number of the students would be 285. Target Population Undergraduate students of 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd years from Biomedical Science Department. Sampel Population Sampling method = Stratified random sampling. 17 Sample size Sample size for the target population is calculated according to the formula below: n = X 2 NP (1-P) ∆ 2 (N-1)+X 2 (1-P) n = 3.84 (285) 0.5 (1-0.5) 0.05 2 (285-1)+3.84(0.5)(1-0.5) = 163.83 ≈ 164 subjects Add 10% of sample size in case there are respondents dropped out = 16 subjects Therefore, Sample size = 180 students, where 60 students are chosen from each stratum. 19 S TATISTICAL ANALYSIS The research will be analyzed by using SPSS 14.0 The value for p is 0.05 corresponding to 95% of confidence interval The test that will be conducted are : a) Independent t-test @ Mann-Whitney test b) One-way ANOVA @ Kruskal-Wallis test c) Pearson Correlation @ Spearman Correlation

Academic performance refers to how students deal with their studies and how they cope with or accomplish different tasks given to them by their teachers.
