2  In general, engineers are said to apply the principles of science and math to develop economical solutions to technical problems.  Civil Engineering is one of the oldest types of engineering.  Civil engineers are involved in the design and construction of the physical structures that make up our surroundings such as roads, bridges, buildings and harbors.  Coastal engineering, Construction engineering, earthquake engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineers, material engineers, transportation engineers, structural engineers and urban engineering are just a sample of the specialty areas civil engineers can focus on.  A P.E. license is needed in every state.

3  Civil engineers are the lowest paid engineers in the field. Median Salary by Years Experience

4  They should focus on taking math courses such algebra, geometry, calculus and trigonometry.  English and humanities courses such as history, economics and sociology are also important.  Lastly, students need to take chemistry and physics to prepare for college.  The student should take as many of these classes as possible. This will allow for better qualifications to be accepted into college for civil engineering.
