2 Engaging Students in Systems Engineering Learning Objectives Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering; Ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems; Ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data; Ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs; Ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice; Ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams; Understanding of professional and ethical responsibility; Ability to communicate effectively; Broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context; Recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning; Knowledge of contemporary issues.

3 Curriculum Infusion for Student Engagement: A Partnership Student affairs and academic sides must take lead roles  Personnel from a health promotion specialty pair with an academic faculty member Allow students to be experts on culture Curriculum infusion must be viewed by faculty as an important engagement strategy  This involvement includes training about curriculum infusion and developing the subsequent program  Incentives for faculty participation are emergent properties

4 What we have achieved to date: Health promotion Social norms marketing campaigns Collect baseline data (surveys), Analyze baseline data to develop simple, truthful, and consistent messages that highlight lower-risk drinking norms and protective behaviors, Ensure credibility via focus groups, Deliver the message via posters, email, Hoo Vision, cups, maps Support message retention Students take the lead on data collection techniques such as interviewing, survey design and focus group design; data analysis and statistics graphic design

6 What we have achieved to date: Awards and Recognition The Foxfield Capstone project won the 2009 Bronze Excellence Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators in the category of Student Health, Wellness, Counseling, and related. The teams’ efforts were a featured story on the U.Va.Today website The teams’ efforts were a featured story on the National Public Radio’s Morning Edition as part of a larger story on college alcohol abuse prevention programs at U.Va. Letters of support from Dean of Students and V.P. Chief Student Affairs Officer
