3 Tasks 1.Meet with, examine, & interview patients. Order tests or procedures if needed 2.Give anesthesia or sedating medicine during medical procedures 3.Keep track of the flow of anesthesia & patients vital signs. Record all activity 4.Respond to any complications or reactions from anesthesia 5.After procedures, decide when patients are stable enough to be sent home or moved to another ward of the hospital

4 Working Conditions Always work indoors & with a team of doctors, nurses, and medical staff Talk to patients & patients’ family daily Work very close to patients (within inches) Dangers: regularly exposed to diseases, infections, contaminants, and radiation

8 Working Hours May work any shift, weekends, and holidays May be on-call any hr. of the day or night Work 40+ hrs./wk. Usually work an established schedule

9 Outlook Need will increase because the population is growing and aging – This means that the number of surgical procedures will increase

11 Advancement Opportunities Get advances by getting additional training Once they have years of experience, anesthesiologists who work in hospitals or surgical centers may become administrators Anesthesiologists with years of experience may also teach at medical schools After becoming a respectable anesthesiologist, you may do research or teach at universities –they may become department heads there

15 Evaluation I LOVE this job and know for a fact that it’s what I want to do. I like it because: – It allows you to make a difference in peoples’ lives – You work as a team with other doctors, nurses, etc. – The wages & outlook are good – I have personal experience with anesthesiologists, and as a result, I know how I want to be as an anesthesiologist However, the setbacks of the job are: – The amount of time it takes to become an anesthesiologist (≈ 12 yrs.) – Being on call all the time while having a family – The possibility of having to pay my own malpractice insurance
