School of Mathematics  College of Sciences  Located in the Skiles Building  52 Full-time faculty+several visiting professors  BS, MS and PHD programs  William T (Tom) Trotter, Chair  www.math.gatech.edu

Facilities  Math Lab Offers Tutoring for a number of math courses  Computer Lab Packages like Mathematica, MapleV, MatLab  Center for Dynamical Systems and NonLinear Studies Established 1988 Misson: To Strengthen existing math research at Tech w/ special focus on dynamical systems, differential equations, nonlinear analysis applications

Degrees  BS Applied Mathematics  BS Discrete Mathematics  M.Sc Mathematics  M.Sc Statistics (joint w/ ISYE)  M.Sc Quantitative and Computational Finance (QCF) (joint w/ College of Management, ISYE)  PH.D Mathematics  PH.D Algorthims, Combinatorics and Optimization (ACO) (joint w/ CoC, ISYE)  PH.D Bioinformatics (joint w/ CoC,Chem,Bio,BioEng)

What is??  Applied Mathematics: Uses all areas of mathematics to solve real world problems. Apply to a second area of science / engineering eg. Differential Equations,Abstract Algebra  Discrete Mathematics: Techniques to apply to objects of separated values…. Uses in Business/ Computer Science. eg. Combinatorics, Set Theory, Graph Theory, Decision Making, Matric Algebra

Activities  Pi Mu Epsilon: National Mathematics Honor Society  Annual High School Math Competition: Since 1958 Participants grades 8-12 worldwide Winners receive Tech scholarships up to $2500 375 participants in 2005 Challenging examinations in mathematical problem solving and reasoning. Held in Spring Semester

MathSciNet  Electronic version of AMS’s Mathematical Reviews from it’s 1940 inception to today  Mathematical Reviews originally created because Hitler and the German National Socialism Movement in Germany was barring many mathematicians from contributing to Zentralblatt.  Over 50,000 new reviews each year… over 70,000 items indexed annually.  Journal articles, books, conferences are indexed  Reviews are “submitted”  SFX enabled  Updated daily

Topics covered in MathSciNet  Pure Mathematics  Applied Mathematics  Core Statistics  Applied Statistics  Computer Science (>2004)  Related Physics and Applications

Ways to Search MathSciNet  By Author  By Journal  By MSC  Current Journals and Books can be browsed  Combined Membership List (CML) may help in contacting an author

MSC Codes  Mathematics Subject Classification  Developed in 1940  5,000 two-, three-, and five-digit classifications, each corresponding to a discipline of mathematics  Used primarily in MathSciNet and Zentralblatt  MSC2000 is the current version

More information  MSC 2000 http://www.ams.org/msc/ http://www.ams.org/msc/  MathSciNet Guidebook (24 pages) http://www.ams.org/msnhtml/guideb ook.pdf
