Satisfaction with specific targets: “How satisfied are you with…your vacuum cleaner?”

Cognition Affect Satisfaction with broad targets: “How satisfied are you with…your life as a whole?”

Affective states SWB Cognition SYSTEMATIC PROCESSING HEURISTIC PROCESSING Diener et. al. - “t op-down influences on how bottom-up information is used” (2002, p.443) Veenhoven - “ if we feel fine, we gather we must be satisfied” (1996, p.10)

Affect SWB Cognition SYSTEMATIC PROCESSING Affect SWB HEURISTIC PROCESSING Situational Factors: Hi gh in personal relevance. Complex, atypical targets. Situational Factors: Low personal relevance. Uncomplicated, commonly encountered targets.

Affect SWB Cognition SYSTEMATIC PROCESSING Affect SWB HEURISTIC PROCESSING Situational Factors: Hi gh in personal relevance. Complex, atypical targets. Dispositional Factors: High ‘need for cognition’ Situational Factors: Low personal relevance. Uncomplicated, commonly encountered targets. Dispositional Factors: Low ‘need for cognition’

HYPOTHESES 1 - The question “how satisfied are you with your life as a whole?” will provide a good context for both systematic and heuristic processing to occur. 2 - Individual levels of ‘need for cognition’ will moderate whether the systematic strategy is adopted to process the SWB judgement. High levels of need for cognition will be related to affect infusion via systematic processing. Low levels of need for cognition will be related to affect infusion via heuristic processing. 3 - Affective states will moderate whether the systematic strategy is adopted to process the SWB judgement. Negative affective states will be related to affect infusion via systematic processing. Positive affective states will be related to affect infusion via heuristic processing.
