4 INTRODUCTION At Brookfield Life Safety is our number one priority. We strive to ensure that all occupants of our buildings are provided with a safe and comfortable workplace at all times. This presentation is designed to familiarize both tenants and employees on the Fire and Life Safety components of the building and the measures that are required to be taken when an alarm is activated. It also allows all tenants to provide ongoing training to employees, especially during the orientation of new employees.

5 INTRODUCTION PURPOSE OF THIS TRAINING Next  Provide information on the various components of the Fire Alarm System  Ensure the safety of all occupants  Provide training on the evacuation procedures during an alarm condition  Provide the locations of stairways, fire hose cabinets, emergency phones and other equipment  Review the various announcements that will be heard over the Voice Communication System

7 OPERATIONS MANAGER OPERATIONS MANAGERResponsibilities FIRE SAFETY COMMITTEE  Implement the Fire Safety Plan  Ensure that Tenants have been provided with a copy of all appropriate sections of the Plan  Advise the Fire Department of any revisions to the Plan  Ensure that all fire safety committee members have been provided with a copy of the Plan and trained to discharge related duties

8 OPERATIONS MANAGER Responsibilities FIRE SAFETY COMMITTEE  Maintain an up to date copy of the Fire Safety Plan  Ensure that Checking, Inspection and Testing requirements of the Vancouver Fire Dept. Code are implemented in conjunction with Operations Staff.  Be familiar with the evacuation procedures described in the Plan and have in his possession, a key to initiate a general evacuation alarm

9 FIRE SAFETY COMMITTEE OPERATIONS MANAGER Responsibilities  Restore the fire protection systems and fire alarm system back to normal operation after an emergency condition has been cleared  Advise the Fire Department of the temporary shutdown of building’s fire protection systems and arrange for alternative measures for fire safety  Conduct fire drills as outlined in the Plan  Advise the General Manager of any revisions to the Plan  Ensure that his responsibilities are implemented during his absence by a designated assistant

10 MAINTENANCE STAFF Responsibilities FIRE SAFETY COMMITTEE  Obtain and review a copy of the Fire Safety Plan  Perform the Checking, Inspection and Testing required under the Vancouver Fire Dept. Code  Assist in the evacuation of the building occupants, as described under the emergency procedures and to have in their possession, a key to initiate a general evacuation alarm.  Participate in the fire drills as described in the Plan

11 SECURITY STAFF Responsibilities  Be familiar with floor areas, exits and the location of the fire fighting equipment  Be familiar with the evacuation procedures described in the Plan and to be knowledgeable in operational use of the Fire Alarm System.  Participate in the fire drills as described in the Plan  Assist in fire prevention by noting and reporting to the Building Management where fire hazards exist  Assist in the orderly evacuation of the building occupants where this is necessary FIRE SAFETY COMMITTEE

12 FIRE WARDENS Responsibilities FIRE SAFETY COMMITTEE  Review the Fire Safety Plan  Be familiar with floor area, exits, location of fire fighting equipment  Maintain an up to date list of all persons requiring assistance  Assist in the emergency evacuation procedures  Participate in fire drills  Fire prevention - report hazards to Building Management  Advise back-up Floor Fire Warden of your absence  Select personnel to assist any persons requiring assistance

13 ASSISTANT FIRE WARDENS Responsibilities FIRE SAFETY COMMITTEE  Review the Fire Safety Plan  Be familiar with floor area, exits, location of fire fighting equipment  Assist in evacuation emergency procedures  Participate in fire drills  Fire prevention - report hazards to Building Management at 604-689-1711  Advise back-up of your absence

14 FIRE WARDENS If You Hear A Fire Alarm Alert Signal  Instruct occupants to prepare for an evacuation and to remain calm  Make occupants aware of all stairway exits  Assign 2 persons to aid those requiring assistance in evacuation  Ensure exits are unobstructed and there is no smoke in stairway, use alternate stairway exit if needed  Notify security of smoke in the stairway FIRE SAFETY COMMITTEE  Check washrooms and enclosed areas and notify occupants to prepare for the possibility of evacuation  Listen for fire alarm evacuation signal  Follow instructions of Voice Communication and Fire Department

15 FIRE WARDENS If You Hear A Fire Alarm Evacuation Signal FIRE SAFETY COMMITTEE  Proceed to central location (elevator lobby)  Direct occupants to nearest exit stair  Advise occupants to move as far away from the building as possible to the Off-site Evacuation Area which is plaza of adjacent building; 1075 West Georgia St.  Ensure an orderly and expedient evacuation  Inform security of any injuries, fire location or persons requiring assistance  Follow instructions of Fire Department  Leave via nearest exit stair

16 ASSISTANT FIRE WARDENS If You Hear A Fire Alarm Evacuation Signal FIRE SAFETY COMMITTEE  Assist and control access of occupants via nearest exit stair. Do not allow the stairways to be overcrowded  Instruct persons to aid anyone requiring assistance  Check washrooms and other closed areas to ensure total evacuation  Close all doors behind you  Advise occupants when entering stairway to use inner most side of stairway to allow easy access of persons from other floors and to provide a clear access for Fire Fighters  Report to Fire Warden that your area is “all clear”  Advise occupants to move as far away from the building as possible to the Off-site Evacuation Area which is plaza of adjacent building; 1075 West Georgia St.

17 IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE OCCUPANTS  Leave area immediately, remove any persons in immediate danger  Close doors to affected area  Call 911 - advise them of your location and floor number.  Use stairways NOT elevators, if you encounter smoke use alternate stairway  Do not return to your floor until the All Clear Announcement is made  Activate building fire alarm system  Advise Security in lobby of the situation

18 IF YOU HEAR A FIRE ALARM ALERT SIGNAL OCCUPANTS  Prepare for evacuation grab your purse, coat, lock your desk  Do NOT call the management office  Move close to an exit  Follow instructions of the Fire Safety Team  Listen for the evacuation signal  Follow instructions heard over the Voice Communication System and the Fire Department  Prepare to evacuate customers and visitors from your area

19 IF YOU HEAR A FIRE ALARM EVACUATION SIGNAL  Before opening door: feel door and handle for heat  if hot, remain in your suite and unlock door  if not hot, brace yourself against door and open slightly  close door if you feel a hot draft or air pressure and remain in suite  call 911 and alert them of your location (1055 West Georgia Street) OCCUPANTS

20 IF YOU HEAR A FIRE ALARM EVACUATION SIGNAL  If safe to do so, leave the floor immediately via nearest stairway exit. Do NOT wait for announcements  Do NOT use elevators. Close doors behind you  Follow instructions of Wardens and Fire Department  Do not return to your floor until the All Clear Announcement has been made even if the Alert Alarm is heard when exiting  Remain calm  Use an alternate exit if smoke is in stairway  When exiting, use the inner most side of stairway to allow access of persons from other floors and to provide clear access for Fire Fighters

21 IF YOU HEAR A FIRE ALARM EVACUATION SIGNAL  If you are trapped:  return to an office and close the door  seal off all cracks and air transoms or other openings where smoke may enter  crouch low to the floor  call 911 and alert them of your location (1055 West Georgia Street)  wait to be rescued and remain calm OCCUPANTS

22 GENERAL OVERVIEW GENERAL OVERVIEW BUILDING RESOURCES  Royal Centre consists of a 36 story office tower, 2 levels of retail, a tunnel connection with the nearby Burrard Skytrain station and three levels of underground parking.  An integral part of the complex is the direct access to Hyatt Hotel.

24 FIRE ALARM ACTIVATING DEVICES  A Fire Alarm will sound when one of the following devices is initiated: BUILDING RESOURCES Fire Alarm Manual Pull Station Sprinklers Heat Detector Smoke Detector

25 Floor 6 FLOOR IN ALARM Floor 10 Floor 9 Floor 8 Floor 11 Floor 7 Floor 5 Floor 2 Floor 3 Floor 4 Ground Floor Elevators FIRE ALARM SYSTEM 1)A fast pulsing Evacuation Alarm (120 beeps a min) to be heard on the floor originating the alarm and on the floor above and below 2)A slow pulsing Alert Alarm to be heard on all other floors 3)All elevators to manually return to the ground floor  Activation of a fire alarm initiating device will cause: BUILDING RESOURCES

27 VOICE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM VOICE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM  The Voice Communication System is an important component of the Fire Alarm System as it provides instructions to all occupants during an alarm condition  Messages originate from the CENTRAL CONTROL located on the ground floor in the lobby  Announcements are heard through speakers located in the ceilings in both common and tenant areas BUILDING RESOURCES

28 VOICE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM VOICE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM  The following 2 messages will be announced over the Voice Communication System shortly after an alarm has been activated BUILDING RESOURCES “YOUR ATTENTION, YOUR ATTENTION” The sound you are hearing is a Fire Emergency Signal. For your Safety, prepare your floor for a possible evacuation. Proceed to the nearest emergency stairwell exit and await further instructions. Floors XXXX need to evacuate. Follow the stairwell down and out of the building. All other floors, standby and await further instructions.” FLOORS IN EVACUATION ALARM FLOORS IN ALERT ALARM “YOUR ATTENTION, YOUR ATTENTION” The sound you are hearing is a Fire Emergency Signal. For your Safety, prepare your floor for a possible evacuation. Proceed to the nearest emergency stairwell exit and await further instructions.” The Fire Department is now on site and investigating. Standby for further instructions.

29 VOICE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM VOICE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM BUILDING RESOURCES  If a fire signal is sounded on any level from the Mezzanine down to P3 Parking including the Bank Pavillion, then all levels from the 3rd floor in the tower downward including the Bank Pavillion will have an immediate EVAC alarm sounding. The Tower from the 4th floor upwards will be on ALERT ALARM until further announcements.” ALERT ALARM - FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT “YOUR ATTENTION, YOUR ATTENTION” The sound you are hearing is a Fire Emergency Signal. For your Safety, prepare your floor for a possible evacuation. Proceed to the nearest emergency stairwell exit and await further instructions.” The Fire Department is now on site and investigating. Standby for further instructions. Floors Mezzanine down to P3 Parking including Bank Pavillion need to evacuate. Follow the stairwell down and out of the building. All other floors, standby and await further instructions.” EVACUATION ALARM - Mezzanine to P3 Parking Including Bank Pavillion

30 VOICE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM VOICE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM BUILDING RESOURCES  If the alarm has been determined to be false, or no danger is present the following announcement will be provided “YOUR ATTENTION, YOUR ATTENTION” The Fire Department has given the ALL CLEAR to reset the system. There is no threat of Fire. The elevator service and air conditioning will resume shortly. You may return to your offices. The building is back to normal operation. We apologize for the inconvenience and would like to thank you for your co-operation.” ALL CLEAR

31 CENTRAL CONTROL CENTRAL CONTROL The CENTRAL CONTROL is located behind the Security Front Desk in the lobby containing the following: BUILDING RESOURCES  Fire Alarm control and annunciator panels  Voice communication controls  Annunciation of all smoke dampers (open-closed)  Manual controls for smoke dampers, exhaust fans and stair pressurization fans  Manual release of electro-magnetic locks

33 FIRE PROTECTION EQUIPMENT Sprinkler Systems BUILDING RESOURCES  A wet sprinkler type system is provided throughout the building from the P3 parking level to the 36th floor  The system is connected to the fire alarm panel through electrically supervised control valves  The above noted system will automatically activate during a fire condition when the temperature level near a sprinkler head reaches a certain degree set point

34 EMERGENCY POWER EMERGENCY POWER Emergency power is provided by two diesel generators to the following fire protection systems: BUILDING RESOURCES  Fire Alarm System  Stairway Pressurization Fans and Smoke Exhaust Fans  Smoke Exhaust Fans  Emergency Lighting  Exit Signs and Fire Pumps

37 CROSS-OVER FLOORS EXIT STAIRWAYS Purpose: Cross-over floors provide unobstructed access from one stairway to another on the same floor. HIGH RISE  35th  33rd  28th  27th  22nd  21st LOW RISE  20th  16th  11th  6th  4th  3rd - south side  Mezzanine

38 PROTECTION EQUIPMENT MANUAL PULL STATION  Located beside each exit stairwell. Upon discovery of fire, pull the manual pull station to activate audible alarm. EMERGENCY PHONE  Located in the elevator lobbies. Open door and lift handset to establish direct communication with the building’s EVAC Center

39 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS PROTECTION EQUIPMENT  Two 5lb. ABC extinguishers are provided on all floors on the two Fire Hose Cabinets; one next to the Men’s washroom & another next to the Ladies’ washroom

40 FIRE PREVENTION Good fire prevention is an effective method for implementing fire safety in the building.  Avoid careless storage practices  Do not obstruct sprinkler heads with items stored and stacked under or around them  Ensure that articles such as boxes and storage racks do not obstruct doorways  Be familiar with your responsibilities during a fire condition in the building  Avoid over loading circuits, extension cords (octopus), improper use of extension cords and other electrical problems that could cause a spark or fire

41 EVACUATION PERSONS REQURING ASSISTANCE  Persons Requiring Assistance should be evacuated near the stairwells or left by the stairwells with their assistants  The Fire Department will effect a rescue via the elevators if it is safe to do so  If it is life threatening for persons requiring assistance to remain on the floor use one of the following techniques to transport them via the stairways  NOTE: Inform Supervisory Staff of the evacuation so they can clear the stairway while you transport the persons requiring assistance

42 EVACUATION The Back Pack Lift PERSONS REQURING ASSISTANCE  The rescuer would kneel at the front of the person and place the person’s arms up and over the rescuer’s shoulders and across his/her chest  The rescuer should then lean forward and raise slowly to standing position

43 EVACUATION Two Rescuer Seat Carry PERSONS REQURING ASSISTANCE  The rescuers position themselves on either side of the person with their hands grasping the other’s upper arm or shoulder

44 EVACUATION Two Rescuer Seat Carry PERSONS REQURING ASSISTANCE  The person would place his/her arms firmly around the rescuers’ neck
