1 ENSH WCTOH 2002 European smoke free hospital Network Florin Mihaltan Anne Marie Schoelcher Jean Patrick Deberdt Ariadni Ouranou François Chieze Yannis Tountas Didier Vander Steichel Stefano Nardini Elvira Mendez Bertrand Dautzenberg Health Care Worker Surveys in Europe

ENSH WCTOH 2003 2 Aims of ENSH In Europe most workplaces are smoke-free by law, Implementation of non-smoking workplace policies is incomplete, The hospital is not a common workplace, The hospital is a model for public health, A non-smoking hospital policy is impossible to implement with a smoking staff, A staff of non-smokers is more credible for treatment of smokers.  Decrease of smoking rate in medical staff is a major aim of the smoke-free hospital

ENSH WCTOH 2003 3 European Survey of ENSH European Network of smoke-free hospital members agree to have 13 common questions on the HCW tobacco questionnaire. This questionnaire was tested in small groups in 5 countries and in a large group in one. We present the results of these European surveys.

ENSH WCTOH 2003 4 The objectives of the study The use of common questions on smoking to assess smoking habits of HCW To assess the prevalence of smoking among professionals To be a barometer for each country  Anti-smoking resources inside the hospitals  Measure the impact of the strategy for every nation

ENSH WCTOH 2003 5 HCW questionnaire Age…..sex…..job…..night work…….. If you are a daily smoker: - On average how many cigarettes (or cigars or pipes) do you smoke per day ? /__/__/ cigarettes/days - How long after waking up do you smoke ?  60 minutes - Are you planning to quit ?  in the next month  in the next 3-6 month  in the next year  not at this time  no If you are an ex-smoker: - age of smoking cessation /__/__/ years old - on average, how many cigarettes (or pipe or cigars) did you smoke per day ? /__/__/ cigarettes/days

ENSH WCTOH 2003 6 HCW common questions What are the barriers for implementing smoke free hospitals ? What are the factors influencing the decision of hospitals ? What are the targets in this hospital ? What are the needs ?

ENSH WCTOH 2003 7 The actual data of the study The following results were obtained from each country’s survey responses, which vary according to their national health systems and policies 6 countries answered to the questionnaire: France, Spain,Greece, Ireland, Belgium and Romania
