1 TOPICS IN (NANO) BIOTECHNOLOGY Course Outline 2nd October, 2006

2 Course Outline Class runs every Monday, 09.00-11.00 and on every third Wednesday there will be an experimental demonstration, from October 2nd – for Nano MSc students Class runs every Monday, 09.00-11.00 from October 2nd – for Chem Eng PhD students There will a research visit to –CMN (Instituto de Microelectrónica de Barcelona) –ICMAB ( Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona) »(date to be decided)

3 Course Outline The marks for the course will be based on continuous assessment (60%) reports presentations Final exam (20%) Attendance (5%) Must pass all segments of course for overall pass mark

4 The final exam consists of a multiple choice written exam and an oral presenatation These exams will take place at the end of the first semester The language of these exams will be English Course Outline

8 Course Details Class VI Electrophoresis, Sequencing, PCR, Molecular Beacons, Real time PCR Class VII Dining & Sleuthing with DNA Class VIII Stem Cell Therapy and Gene Therapy Class IX The Human Genome Project Genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics Class X Drug Discovery Patents, intellectual property, and Tech Transfer

9 Course Details NANOTECHNOLOGY Class I Nanotechnology: History, definitions and major milestones Class II ‘Bottom-down’ – Nanofabrication Techniques Class III ‘Top-up’- Biological self assembly Class IV Nanoparticle fabrication and biofunctionalisation Class V Nanotools: Microsopic techniques for characterisation and manipulation on a nanoscale
