What’s the Use? ILL Data Dilemma What does ILL Data really represent? Is the data really an important indicator of patterns of need or does it say more about ease of accessibility and requesting? Is the data really being used for collection decisions? Title AnalysisTitle Analysis User AnalysisUser Analysis Title & User AnalysisTitle & User Analysis Hybrid AnalysisHybrid Analysis

Title Analysis

User Analysis What does it mean that about 10% of PSU FTE are using ILL? What does the differences in discipline mean? What level of use can we afford?

Title & User Analysis

Packaging Matters What do we hope to accomplish with statistics? Allocation StaffingStaffing BudgetBudget Collection Dev.Collection Dev.Planning DepartmentDepartment InstitutionInstitution Future of R.S.Future of R.S.Others?

Let’s talk about it… What does ILL Data really represent? –User Needs and Faculty/Student Interests, plus diversity –Policies check. –Dialogue within the library, within university/college, and with consortia. Is the data really an important indicator of patterns of need or does it say more about ease of accessibility and requesting? –Depends on the articulation and internalization. Is the data really being used? –How understandable is it? How easy to match library/institutional priorities? –To what degree do we want user ‘needs’ to drive collection development budgets and selection? What do you find useful? How do you use ILLiad for Collection Development? Cyril Oberlander, Portland State University oberlanderc@pdx.edu tel. 503-725-3357 oberlanderc@pdx.edu
