Bulgarian Martenitsa If you are walking along the streets in Bulgaria on the 1st of March you will wittness many smiling faces. But first of all your eyes will be captured by martenitza (martenitsa, martenica). Everyone has decorated their clothes with them. Moreover, you can see decorated dogs and cats. Bulgarian Martenitsa Instructions for Making Martenitsas The simplest Martenitsa is the twisted red and white thread. You have  to tie some red and white thread together and then two people twist each end in opposite directions about 20 times and then put two ends together and smoothen it.
