COSOSIMO Workshop Outbrief October 28, 2005 Jo Ann Lane jolane@usc.edu University of Southern California Center for Software Engineering COCOMO Forum – October 2005 © USC CSE 2005

COSOSIMO Workshop Results © USC CSE 2005 COCOMO Forum 20052 Agenda SoS/FoS WBS ideas—Gan Wang, BAE Systems COSOSIMO Workshop July 2005 Survey Results –Overview of results –How to interpret –Call for additional responses SoS LSI management model ideas –Candidate ideas—Gary Constantine, Raytheon –Discussion Using COSYSMO to estimate SoS LSI technical effort

COSOSIMO Workshop Results © USC CSE 2005 COCOMO Forum 20053 Attendees Chris Angermeier, Raytheon Jack Arabian, CMA Beth O’Donnell, Boeing Sandy Stoller, Boeing Gary Thomas, Raytheon Brad Clark, SMI Anthony Peterson, Raytheon Gary Hafen, Lockheed Martin Dick Stutzke, SAIC Chris Miller, SSCI Vicki Love, Raytheon A Winsor Brown, USC CSE John Rieff, Raytheon Scott Rigby, Raytheon Kristen, Terry, BAE Systems Vu Nguyen, USC CSE Thomas Tan, USC CSE Barry Boehm, USC CSE Ali Nikolai, SAIC Mike Ross, Galorath Gary Constantine, Raytheon Dan Ligett, Softstar Joanne Boutte, Lockheed Martin Lecersia Clark, Lockheed Martin Mauricio Aguiar, TI Metricas Carol Dekkers, Qaulity Plus Tech Ricardo Valerdi, MIT Paul Stelling, Aerospace Gan Wang, BAE Systems Jo Ann Lane, USC CSE 30 attendees, representing 15 organizations….

COSOSIMO Workshop Results © USC CSE 2005 COCOMO Forum 20054 October 2005 Workshop Objectives Clarify the Lead System Integrator (LSI) activities to be estimated by the COSOSIMO model Investigate candidate approach(es) for estimating the LSI program/business management effort Determine whether an SoS calibration of COSYSMO warrants further investigation as a viable approach for estimating LSI technical effort Begin converging on a relevant and complete set of parameters for the COSOSIMO model that are easily discerned in the early stages of SoS development

COSOSIMO Workshop Results © USC CSE 2005 COCOMO Forum 20055 SoS Program WBS Discussion (Lead by Gan Wang, BAE Systems) Provided much deeper understanding of LSI role and associated activities Provided good framework for continuing discussions on “A day in the life of an LSI” The SoS Program The SoS in Operation Spiral AlphaSpiral BravoSpiral CharlieProgram Office Plan- Driven Team IV&V Team Agile Team Level 0 Level 1 Development

COSOSIMO Workshop Results © USC CSE 2005 COCOMO Forum 20056 LSI Activity Discussions LSI Activities –Recommendation: LSI activities should be broken out into the following categories Program/business management activities (as opposed to technical management activities) Technical activities (which include technical management activities identified in EIA 632) –Results: Generated another list of LSI activities to compare with July 2005 list No significant new activities identified LSI Effort Program/Business Management Effort Technical Effort Proposed scope for COSOSIMO if technical can be estimated using COSYSMO SoS calibration Investigate possibility of COSYSMO SoS calibration to estimate this part

COSOSIMO Workshop Results © USC CSE 2005 COCOMO Forum 20057 Day in the Life of an LSI Plan, execution, monitoring and update (IMP/IMS) TIM/Reviews- planning and conduct Vendor mgmt Teammate management Crisis management (continual) Briefing Congress Prioritization Rebaseline Build SoI architecture Interface mgmt Change mgmt –Requirement –Architecture Risk management Travel planning Meeting coordination Resource allocation Source selection Types of TIMs –Interfaces –Functionality allocation –Workshare reallocation SoI Integration, V&V –Planning –Setup –Execution SOI: System of Interest

COSOSIMO Workshop Results © USC CSE 2005 COCOMO Forum 20058 Day in the Life of an LSI (continued) SOI financial analysis Organizational overhead activities (impact on schedule) Process management Audits (quality/organizational) Training –User –Team –Mentoring Personnel resource development ECP development Measurement collection and analysis Feasibility analyses/trade studies Engineering review boards CM

COSOSIMO Workshop Results © USC CSE 2005 COCOMO Forum 20059 Review of Candidate Program Management Cost Estimation Model Provided by Gary Constantine, Raytheon….

COSOSIMO Workshop Results © USC CSE 2005 COCOMO Forum 200510 Discussion Results Sample cost model helped clarify “management activities” to be estimated –Should focus on program/business management effort –Technical management should be part of technical effort Sample cost model (in Excel) will be provided as part of minutes to COSOSIMO Working Group End of workshop question: After all of the discussions on LSI technical and management activities, is a COSOSIMO with two primary parts (management module and an SoS-calibrated COSYSMO) is a viable way to proceed? ANSWER: (Almost?) unanimous yes

COSOSIMO Workshop Results © USC CSE 2005 COCOMO Forum 200511 Second Question: Viability of COSOSIMO Data Collection Affiliates queried about the availability of SoS LSI data in their organizations –Whether LSI-only data can be obtained –Whether data can be broken out into management and technical buckets General consensus: Data is available, just not as many programs as they had for COSYSMO at the system level Discussed options for collecting data from US government LSI organizations—several attendees took the action to identify potential points of contact

COSOSIMO Workshop Results © USC CSE 2005 COCOMO Forum 200512 Using COSYSMO to estimate SoS LSI technical effort Case Study exercise deferred due to lack of time…

COSOSIMO Workshop Results © USC CSE 2005 COCOMO Forum 200513 Action Items J. Lane Action Items –Update LSI activity descriptions with respect to the SoS WBS terms –Make a first cut at identifying WBS boxes for each of the LSI categories: management and technical –Update CSE COSOSIMO web page COSOSIMO Working Group Attendees –Provide LSI points of contact for data to J. Lane
