1 High School Health Requirements On-line Expanding Opportunities to Learn

2 Why move to on-line learning? Provide students with options (on-line or in classroom) 24/7 access to education Develops skills and competencies needed in the 21st century Course offerings not limited by the number of students Expand our student audience

3 Why address health requirements on-line?  OUSD Policy: Provide online opportunities for students to complete health requirements  A Students are required to complete this material for graduation  competency–based requirement is readily adapted to an on-line system (similar to driver’s education)  A prefect starting point from which to grow our catalog of offerings

4 What is required by the state? EC 51934[b]  The nature of HIV/AIDS and its effects on the body  The manner HIV/AIDS is transmitted  Methods to reduce risk of HIV/AIDS infection  Public health issues associated with HIV/AIDS  Local resources for HIV testing and medical care  Refusal and decision-making skills to avoid high- risk activities  Societal views on HIV/AIDS with emphasis on compassion for persons with HIV/AIDS

5 Does this differ from the Contemporary Living class?  Contemporary Living covers a much broader set of topics:  Health Skills  Mental and Emotional Health  Family and Social Health  Growth and Development  Nutrition  Personal and Physical Activity  Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs  Communicable and Chronic Diseases  Family Life (STIs, HIV/AIDS, Human Sexuality)  Consumer and Community Health  Environmental Health  Injury Prevention and Personal Safety

6 How will the course be formatted?  Web-based system to allow greatest access  One module for each required area  End of module assessments required for students to move forward  Self-paced – students may pause and return to pick up where they left off

7 How will the course be graded?  Student must pass all modules to complete the requirement  Course completion will need to be logged in the Student Information System  Overall Met/Not Met will be reported on transcript  No credits given (a requirement fulfilled similar to CAHSEE)  Parents continue to have the right to opt their child out of instruction

8 When students access the course?  Available beginning in Fall 2010  Schools will offer computer lab time to ensure equal access  Continue to offer Contemporary Living class for students that wish to take a “brick-and- mortar” class for 5 elective credits
