3 3 About JSTOR Scholarly Journal Archive Mission: (1) create a trusted archive of important scholarly literature (2) to extend access to that archive as broadly as possible. Originally conceived at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 1994 Established as an independent not-for-profit organization in August 1995 Initially a pilot project (University of Michigan) to provide electronic access to the backfiles of ten journals in two core fields, economics and history Offices in New York City and Ann Arbor, Michigan USA

The change of SSH researchers’ using habit and resource type Applying early period’s resource is getting more and more important for basic disciplines Trend of library collecting resources Libraries collect not only the latest resources, but also think highly of value of the early period’s resources –Can current e-journals and databases fulfill users’ needs or not? –Can print journals recover e-journals’ time lag or not? Journal Archive and Institutional Repository are the trend in libraries Support from government to form library consortia More and more digital archive programs The importance of Archive

15 15 19 th Century British Political Pamphlets At the invitation of RLUK (Research Libraries UK, formerly CURL), JSTOR collaborated on their bid to the JISC Digitization Program. The project envisions: Digitizing 20,000+ 19 th Century British Pamphlets that focus on key Parliamentary debates and figures RLUK libraries will contribute pamphlets to be digitized to JSTOR’s technical specifications at the University of Southampton JSTOR will incorporate the pamphlets into the archive, increasing research pathways to the material by assigning DOIs and opening it to public search engines and other gateways

16 16 Ireland Collection At the invitation of Queen’s University Belfast, JSTOR collaborated to help develop an electronic library of core Irish materials: Project encompasses 100 journals (including some no longer publishing), 200 monographs, and 2,500 manuscript pages JSTOR, working closely with Queen’s, will license copyrighted works from publishers Queen’s will digitize the materials to JSTOR’s specifications; JSTOR will take responsibility for making them accessible and their long-term preservation Majority of journals currently have no online presence
