A Student’s point of view Andreas Salzburger, Univ. of Innsbruck & PH-ATC CERN RECFA Meeting, Innsbruck, 26/03/2004 Introduction of myself Summary of the Town meeting organized in association with the YPP club at CERN Personal comments YOUNG PARTICLE PHYSICISTS

RECFA Meeting, Innsbruck, 26/03/2004 A. Salzburger about me High school in Wörgl, Austria Diploma thesis about muon smearing in fast detector simulation of the ATLAS experiment at the University of Innsbruck (Master degree June 2003) Since July 2003 – PhD 1) in ATLAS-ATC, development of the extrapolation and track fitting package with resulting preparation study of a high precision W mass measurement 1) As a member of the Austrian Doctoral Student Program at CERN

RECFA Meeting, Innsbruck, 26/03/2004 A. Salzburger TOWN MEETING of Austrian PhD Students Fellows/Postdocs at CERN, March 10, 2004 Felt quality of studies/duration high medium low very low Interest Recruitment Random Constraint Why HEP Particle Physics Industry no idea In which field do I see my future ? in Austria not in Austria no idea And where ? Work situation & Supervision good very good ok bad

RECFA Meeting, Innsbruck, 26/03/2004 A. Salzburger TOWN MEETING of Austrian PhD Students Fellows/Postdocs at CERN, March 10, 2004 Felt quality of studies/duration high medium low very low Interest Recruitment Random Constraint Why HEP Particle Physics Industry no idea In which field do I wish to work in the future ? Work situation & Supervision good very good ok bad in Austria not in Austria no idea And where ?

RECFA Meeting, Innsbruck, 26/03/2004 A. Salzburger TOWN MEETING Felt quality of studies/duration high medium low very low Interest Recruitment Random Constraint Why HEP Particle Physics Industry no idea In which field do I see my future ? Work situation & Supervision good very good ok bad It’s neither a straight line nor a smooth analytical Track (but HEP is not a constant Field either) in Austria not in Austria no idea And where ?

RECFA Meeting, Innsbruck, 26/03/2004 A. Salzburger Collaboration size Big HEP collaborations open various possibilitiesmay cause (the fear of): getting lost, responsibility partly on the supervisor/group Publications and author lists seem to be problematic fields being just a small wheel How can I stress my contribution?

RECFA Meeting, Innsbruck, 26/03/2004 A. Salzburger The Monte Carlo Problem HEP in Europe is often “real-data-less” these days - in many countries PhD requires analysis of “real” data - students I’ve asked don’t feel that this is a disadvantage - but similar Town Meetings by the YPP club showed opposite results in the US Is there a „classical view“ of HEP, not totally adopted to the actual requirements? Missing experience in data analysis?

RECFA Meeting, Innsbruck, 26/03/2004 A. Salzburger Tu felix Austria (?) Education is regarded to be good PhD / Fellow / Postdoc position often abroad Few appropriate jobs in industry & research/teaching (after PhD/Postdoc) is it partly a physicist export factory ? "Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube." "Let others wage war, you happy Austria marry!"

RECFA Meeting, Innsbruck, 26/03/2004 A. Salzburger Conclusion Education is regarded to be good in Austria The Austrian Doctoral Student Program at CERN is a real chance for young physicists There is a lack of appropriate/attractive positions in both university and industry in Austria But it‘s worth doing an effort in this field!
