1 Collaborative Multiple Low-Altitude Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Unmanned Ground vehicles for Enhancing Disaster Management Dr. K.S. Rajan, IIIT- H Dr. A. Koteswara Rao, VRSEC Dr. L. Pratap Reddy, JNTU - H

2 Motivation Disasters due to both natural and human hazards –Over 400 million people affected by natural hazards –40 million hectares is prone to floods, 60% landmass is prone to earthquake –Human Caused hazards leading to disasters Limitations of existing approaches –Available local expertise and time tested administrative practices –Local maps, limited use of GIS –Offline with satellite images –Mostly after disaster International status –EU- PEGASUS – Remote sensing by flying at an altitude of 20km –Japan - structural damage inspections due to earthquakes –USA – threats of terrorists is increasing the concern on co-operative UAVs

3 Proposed systems During and after hazard –Near real-time UAVs operate at 100m-30,000m UGVs operate at 30- 60km/h at difficult terrain UAVs and UGVs as autonomous as possible Visual, infrared sensors Assistance to personal during the management

4 Expected Outcomes Technical/Knowledge base development of low-power on board processing of visual information Development of Low-altitude UAVs carrying required payload and on-board processing Collaboration between multiple autonomous systems in achieving a collective objective End-to-end deployable solution in disasters Developing bench-markable disaster management practices and documentation of the exist
