IPEDS COOL COOL is a direct link to information on over 9,000 postsecondary institutions in the United States. COOL includes colleges, universities, community colleges, and trade and technical schools

IPEDS COOL Is designed to help college students, future students, and their families understand the differences between colleges and how much it costs to attend college.

IPEDS COOL can also be used by decision-makers to provide access to data on comparison institutions. IPEDS COOL

Features of the COOL System http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds

Institution Search Enables a user to search for a particular school by name, or for a group of schools using shared characteristics:  type of institution  geographic location  proximity to a specified zip code  instructional programs offered  size  eligibility for Title IV student financial aid programs

 Geographic region  State or outlying area  City  Zip code and maximum distance from zip  Type of institution  Instructional program  Name of institution  Students enrolled (<1,000, 1,000-5,000, 5,000-10,000, 10,000-20,000, or >20,000)  Title IV participating Selecting Your Institution by:

Selecting Your Institution When multiple institutions are found from your search you must select the one institution that you are seeking.

Information Available in COOL Once an institution has been selected the data available on the institution is divided into six distinct categories. 1.General Information, 2.Enrollment, 3.Awards and Degrees, 4.Financial Aid, 5.Accreditation 6.Campus Crime Statistics

General Information The first page of data available in COOL is general information about the institution. –Location of institution –General phone numbers –Link to home page –Levels of degrees and awards offered –Control (Private, Public, Religious affiliation, etc) –Carnegie classification –Accreditation information –Price Information

 If you are not familiar with this number write it down.  This is your institution unit id. It is used in several places within the IPEDS system.  This is the link to your campus website.

General Information Price Information Undergraduate application fee 3 years of information on price of attendance for full-time, first-time undergraduate students –tuition and fees –books and supplies –room and board –other expenses

Navigating in COOL Many individuals never get past the general information pages in COOL, because they do not know how to navigate within the multiple pages of data that are available. The menu bar at the top of the COOL pages is the key to navigating within these multiple pages. Let us take a closer look at the menu bar.

Navigating! Most of the menu options are intuitive: –Home – Opening Page of COOL –Search – Search screen for selecting institutions. –Search Results – Results of your most recent search. –Detail – The General Information page that we just viewed, –Enrollment – Enrollment data, –Awards / Degrees -- Awards and Degrees data, –Financial Aid -- Financial Aid data, –Accreditation – Accreditation data, and –Campus Crime Statistics – link to campus crime statistics.

You will notice that the menu options change across screens. –The options change as well as the location of the menu bars. –Also once you have selected an institution, you will have more menu options. On the general information or detail page, –The home and search options are on the top of the page, and –the options to view other data are found on the bottom of the page. On most of the other pages, the entire menu is found at the top of the page.

Provides information on enrollment –total and undergraduate –Percent of undergraduates by gender and by race/ethnicity –count of full-time, first-time undergraduates –percent of total represented by full-time, first-time undergraduates –percent of full-time, first-time undergraduates who received financial aidEnrollment

Programs Offered / Degrees Conferred Includes the total number of bachelor’s degrees conferred Provides information on the numbers of awards and degrees conferred in the 5 largest programs Allows the user to search by instructional program and award level for more detailed information

Using the search function, let us look take a closer look at degree completions at Northern Kentucky University or your institution within either these or other areas. You will notice that you can search by both instructional program and type of degree. In addition, you may only select from programs that are offered at the respective institution. Finally data presented from this search breaks out the instructional category to the four digit CIP code.

Financial Aid percent of students receiving aid average amount of aid received by type of aid and source –Federal Grants –State and Local Grants –Institutional Grants –Loans to Students Provides information on the types and amounts of financial aid awarded to full-time, first-time undergraduate students

Financial Aid In addition, IPEDS COOL provides a direct link to the United States Department of Education’s Financial Aid for Students home page. At this site, students can get information on the different types of aid available, and how to apply for financial aid. http://www.ed.gov/offices/OSFAP/Students/

Link to U.S. Financial Aid for Students home page

Accreditation The accreditation pages within IPEDS COOL lists the agencies and associations that accredit programs at the institution. IPEDS COOL only lists those accrediting agencies and associations that are recognized by the Secretary of the United States Department of Education. Information on these agencies and accreditation can be found at the following web site: http://www.ed.gov/offices/OPE/accreditation/natlagencies.html

 This information is self- reported by the institution.  To learn more about the accrediting agencies that are recognized by the Secretary of the United States Department of Education, use the link provided on this web page.  http://www.ed.gov/offices/ OPE/accreditation/ natlagencies.html

Other Features In addition, to the data provided within IPEDS COOL, other features of the system include web links to: –The institution’s website, where prospective students can go for more specific application and programmatic information, and –Links to statistics on campus crime for the institution. Statistics are obtained from the Office of Postseconday Education Information may also be found directly through their web page: http://ope.ed.gov/SECURITY/

The opening page contains basic directory information. Specific statistics on campus crime for three years are found via the menu at the bottom of the page. Campus Crime Statistics

Benefits to Users

IPEDS COOL provides valid and reliable information on more postsecondary institutions and more types of postsecondary institutions than any other source currently available. Plus, it provides 3 years of price information - more than any other source currently available. Information...

...Invites comparison 3 years of price information enables trend analysis: Has the price of attending the institution increased in the last 3 years? Has it remained fairly constant? Students can select a group of schools using shared characteristics, and compare price of attendance and student financial aid awards across the group COOL also provides valid and reliable information on comparison institutions to academic planners and decision makers. COOL can be thought of as being an on-line fact book that is publicly available on almost all institutions of higher education.

Short-Comings CAUTION COOL The major short-coming of COOL from the administrative perspective is that:  This tool provides only limited access to variables that are available within IPEDS.  The tool invites comparison, but does not allow you to directly compare your institution to comparison institutions on key performance indicators. As a result, there is a need for a more advanced tool that provides access to more IPEDS data and enables direct comparisons across multiple institutions.  NCES provides such a tool for IPEDS data in the Peer Analysis System. YIELD COOL

Peer Analysis System The Peer Analysis System is a web-based tool that is designed to enable a user to easily retrieve data on a set of postsecondary institutions of the user’s choice. –In addition, the user can compare one institution to a group of comparison institutions. –The comparison institutions are selected by the user. –The system allows the user to generate reports or files using selected IPEDS variables of interest.

What does COOL have to say about your Institution?
