4 The Conquest of the Philippines 200,000 men volunteered for the U.S. military. May 1, 1898 – Commodore George Dewey wins Battle of Manila Bay Filipino Nationalist Emilio Aguinaldo fought Spanish w/ U.S. help August 13, 1898 – 15,000 U.S. troops landed and the Spanish surrendered

6 The Battle of San Juan Hill July 1, 1898 – Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders (volunteer regiment) win at San Juan and Kettle Hills Heavy casualties Leads to the fall of Santiago, Cuba

7 Puerto Rico is Captured July 3, 1898 – Spanish fleet destroyed at Santiago, Cuba paves way for invasion of P.R August 12, 1898 – U.S. forces take Puerto Rico and Spain agrees to a cease fire

8 Effects of the War 3,000-plus Americans died, but only 380 in combat Yellow Fever, Malaria, Dysentery, Cholera, Typhoid, food poisoning – Disease was the biggest killer!
