August, 2010Prerequisites and Corequisites Managing Prerequisites

August, 2010Prerequisites and Corequisites Definitions Prerequisite (P): A course that a student must pass with a “C” or better or “Pass” before enrolling in another course. Evidence of skills knowledge may also be accepted as satisfying a prerequisite for a course through a “Challenge” process. Co-requisite (C): A course that a student must enroll in concurrently. Co-requisite (CP) that can be taken in advance or concurrently.

August, 2010Prerequisites and Corequisites Prerequisites and Co Requisites Prerequisites and co requisites must be preapproved by the Curriculum Advisory Committee (CAC) before they can be enforced. These are published in the print version and the online schedule. Prerequisites and co requisites apply to all sections of a course. Prerequisites and co requisites cannot be suspended if enrollments are low. Change requires CAC action.

August, 2010Prerequisites and Corequisites Computer Blocks Registration in courses with prerequisites and co-requisites are computer controlled (blocked) for courses that have a prerequisite or co requisite. Student receives notification of a block when they attempt to register in course that requires a pre- or co requisite that has not been satisfied. Students are directed to linked web pages that describe procedures for clearing a pre- or co requisite.

August, 2010Prerequisites and Corequisites Computer Clearance  Computer (Banner) checks native SBCC course work and assessment levels.  Transcript Evaluation Office “clears” for challenge petitions:  Form A and Form B.  Pre-enrollment allowed if prerequisite course is “in progress”  Student dropped if prerequisite course is not completed with a grade of “C” or better, prior to beginning of the term.

August, 2010Prerequisites and Corequisites Satisfying a Prerequisite Assessment: Assessment results may satisfy some English, ESL and/or math prerequisites and/or co requisites. Completed SBCC Courses: Students who have completed a prerequisite or co requisite course at Santa Barbara City College and received a grade of "C" or better will be permitted to enroll in the subsequent course requiring the prerequisite. SBCC Courses In-Progress: Students who are currently enrolled in a prerequisite course at SBCC, but have not yet completed the course, may register for the advanced course conditionally, but will not be permitted to attend the advanced class until the prerequisite has been satisfied. Failure to pass the prerequisite course with "C" better will result in being dropped from the course requiring the prerequisite. Computer Monitored and Managed

August, 2010Prerequisites and Corequisites Satisfying a Prerequisite: External Coursework Completed: of coursework completed at other institutions as satisfaction of prerequisites and then register for the advanced course. Transcripts must be on file with the SBCC Admissions & Records office or must be attached to the Prerequisite Challenge. External Coursework In-Progress: Students, who are currently enrolled in a prerequisite course at other institutions but have not yet completed the course, may file a Prerequisite Challenge and may then register for the advanced course conditionally, but will not be permitted to attend the advanced class until the prerequisite has been satisfied. Failure to provide evidence that the external course was completed with a grade of "C" better will result in being dropped fro the course requiring the prerequisite. External Test Scores: i.e. Advanced Placement Scores. Requires Prerequisite Challenge Form A
