3 Why a game board metaphor? Implies a shared experience. Requires strategic thinking. Establishes rapport & skill. It can truly be FUN! You might be the WINNER! Serious competition…? Games cause you to care about the outcome. Successful finish…? You want to win as an individual or as a team. Scorecard value…? The “grade” matters less than learning how to play the game! WARNING! It can be addictive!

4 How does this work with ePortfolios? In teaching… Significant learning activities assist the student to curate evidence of their learning. Providing reflective writing prompts (encouraging the practice of reflection) usually results in lasting and more meaningful value. In learning…students benefit from  Knowing what they have learned;  Discovering what they want to do; and,  Identifying what they must first learn to complete the task. It leads to more active engagement in the process!

6 A final word about detours… EMBRACE THEM! This is often where the learning happens. Some destinations are detours in disguise…such as a new idea or discovery. Some detours become destinations… seemingly wasted time can seem like a loss until you look back and observe what really happened!
