Outline Introduction ETANA-DL Demonstration Tools for Data Publication and Integration Discussion

Problems Delay in publication of primary archaeological data Lack of sustainable solutions to long-term preservation of valuable information Lack of services useful to the archaeology community, including “traditional DL services” Difficulty in understanding complex archaeological information systems Difficulty in requirements elicitation for archaeological systems Interoperability among heterogeneous archaeological systems

Solution – our approach Applying and extending Digital Library (DL) techniques to solve the following problems: making primary data available, data preservation, and interoperability Modeling archaeological information systems using 5S theory to better understand the domain and design the system and the supported services Using componentized frameworks: eliciting requirements, DL integration mechanism, providing extensible services Extending human-computer interaction and software engineering techniques to support archaeology

ETANA-DL Archaeological Digital Library Applies 5S framework:  Societies, Scenarios, Spaces, Structures, Streams Applies and extends the OAI-PMH  Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Handling Design considerations  Componentized  Distributed architecture  Extensible  Portable

ETANA-ADD: an Interactive Tool for Integration Archaeological Collections

Integration problem No commonly accepted schema/ontology Individual sites  Local schema notations  Services on local collections ETANA-DL  Services across all collections  A global schema covering all collections

ETANA-DL global schema Covers different artifact types (in system)  Bone, Seed, Pottery, Figurine, Locus, Burial… A collection from new site:  If artifact is expressed by global schema, perform schema mapping  Otherwise, extend the global schema, and perform mapping Extends incrementally

Integrating new collections Convert custom database to XML  Generate local XML schema  Generate local XML collection Mapping process  Perform schema mapping  Generate global XML collection Publish global collection as an OAI (meta)data provider

Ongoing work Digital library success model ETANA-CMV (please try, and participate in usability study) ETANA CBIR component Improved search features  working with Lucene, XML databases Add new GIS data as made available
