1 A Way to Answer Questions
ACE A Way to Answer Questions

2 What is ACE? Strategy for answering questions
Each letter stands for a part of the answer A = answer the question with the question re-worded in sentence C = cite textual evidence (Give page(s) #’s and “Quote” information from the story) E = expand/explain (Answer the question “so what?” and “what does this mean?”)

3 The Question and Answer
What does the ugly duckling become at the end of the story? Answer: a swan

4 A Answer the question At the end of the story, the ugly duckling becomes a swan.

5 C Cite (Give page(s) #’s and “Quote” information from the story)
On page 27, it states, “Instead he beheld beneath him a beautiful swan.” Also on page 27, the children say that the swan was the best swan of all because he had bright feathers and a bright beak. Plus, the duckling has a yellow glow around him in the picture which makes him look better than the other swans. Usually, you will only have 1 quote to support your answer/prove your answer is correct, but you can have as many quotes or paraphrases of quotes as is needed. For this example, I have 3 “cites” .

6 E Explain/Expand (Answer the question “so what?” and “what does this mean?”) This lets the readers know that the duckling was no longer ugly because he had turned into a beautiful swan.

7 Putting it All Together
At the end of the story, the ugly duckling becomes a swan. On page 27, it says, “Instead he beheld beneath him a beautiful swan.” Also on page 27, the children say that the swan was the best swan of all because he had bright feathers and a bright beak. Plus, the duckling has a yellow glow around him in the picture which makes him look better than the other swans. This lets the readers know that the duckling was no longer ugly because he had turned into a beautiful swan. At a minimum, each RACE answer is only 3 sentences long.
