3 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 3 Resources California Standards Test (CST) released test questions (RTQs) are available on the California Department of Education (CDE) Web site: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sr/css05rtq.asp. Standards-based Test in Spanish (STS) RTQs will be available in 2010 (grades 2-4). Parent/Guardian Information and Assistance Packets – Information for districts about communicating with parents/guardians about STAR – Sample letters – Available in twelve languages – Available on the CDE Web site: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sr/resources.asp

CST STAR Exemplar Parent Guides Provide an overview of the STAR Program and sample questions for each content area assessed. Sample questions include: –Correct answer –Percentage of California students who chose the correct answer –State content standard the question is measuring Web site is scheduled to be available in May 2009.

5 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 5 2009 Test Results Release Districts will begin to receive student test results in July 2009. Individual student reports are mailed to school districts. – Districts receive two copies of each student report, one for the student’s file and one to send to parents/guardians. – State law requires districts to mail student reports to parent/guardians within 20 working days of having received them. Results are posted on the CDE Web site by August 15 of each year. – Results are reported by state, county, district, and school.

6 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 6 Standard Setting The purpose is to collect recommendations for the placement of cut scores. Cut scores determine performance levels (far below basic, below basic, basic, proficient, and advanced). Approval by the State Board of Education (SBE) is required.

7 JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 7 CMA Standard Setting CMA cut scores were adopted by the SBE in November 2008 (English–Language Arts [ELA] and Mathematics in grades 3–5 and Science in grade 5). CMA, grades 6–8 – ELA, grades 6-8: Sept. 23–25 – Mathematics, grades 6 and 7: Sept. 30–Oct. 2 – Science, grade 8: Sept. 30–Oct. 2 Currently recruiting special education participants with expertise in mathematics, ELA, or science in grades 5 through 9.
