5 Social Networking Definitions Social networking system: system brings people together in a central location in order to socialize or conduct business, on Internet sites Social networking site: is a website on the Internet specifically focused on the building and authentication of social networks for people to chat, socialize, debate, network, gossip, share ideas, share interests, make new friends, etc

10 Statistics There are an incredible number of Myspace and Facebook users: 100 million Myspace users 7.5 million Facebook users 20 million using a variety of smaller networking sites

11 Dangers and Problems How many of these users are aware of the dangers and problems with these websites:  Dangers: Exposure to racism, indecent photos, threats, sexual predators  Problems: Loss of Privacy Self incrimination

12 Problem: Loss of Privacy Age of information Identity theft or stalking Areas include:  Personal information  Phone numbers  Screen names  Workplace  Interests  Schedules  Spring Break plans Can lead to: Identity theft or stalking

13 Dangers: Exposure: Racism, nudity, threats, and sexual predators For example:  16 year old girl molested after a man tracked her down using her work information provided  21-year-old man, arrested for the rape of a 14-year- old girl he found on MySpace Very serious problem “You are presenting yourself as potential prey for people who don't have good intentions at heart,” - school administrator, MSNBC news

14 Self Incriminating You aren’t the only ones using these websites  Police, school officials, and potential employers use these websites Examples:  Denied admission to school because of blog  20 students suspended for participating in a threatening myspace group  16 year old arrested after police saw picture of boy holding weapons  Two Louisiana State swimmers kicked off swim team for criticizing coaches on Facebook

15 Overall There are many problems and dangers that come with the internet People need to be smart when using these websites, so that they don’t mess up their futures Not to worry: there are many steps that can be taken to avoid these problems

17 Facebook Allowed to choose who sees profile Be careful in what information is posted Know the people added as friends No users under age 13 allowed on site

18 Myspace Do not meet users in person Only add true information Never give out your name/address Remember that not all users on the site are who they say they are

25 How does YouTube work? YouTube allows its registered users to post videos on the site for not only it’s registered users to view, but anyone on the internet to view. YouTube has over 20 million views per month with around 64,000 movie uploads per day You can find anything from original videos created by users to TV and movie clips on YouTube

27 Facebook.com Facebook is a social network originally designed for college students to interact with other students Facebook was created by former Harvard students Mark Zuckerberg and Chris Hughes

28 Facebook Features Facebook users can interact with one another by sending messages, sharing pictures, and creating groups of interest or classes Users from the same school can view each other’s profiles without making them friends where as students from other schools need to be confirmed friends to view each other’s profiles Many students use Facebook to help one another with homework assignments or studying for tests
