5  As we read:  Look for the IMAGES and DICTION used by the narrator that evoke the “DREAM OF AMERICA”  After we read:  What is the MAIN IDEA of Chunk 1?  What is the EVIDENCE ?  Diction  Imagery  Determine the TONE of chunk 1.  Select a Tier 2 or 3 word from the wheel.

8  On your own:  Read your assigned chunk, marking examples of Yezierska’s (the author) experience as an American. What does “being American” look like to her?  Mark words and images and summarize in the margins.  With your group:  Discuss your findings.  Determine the best answers to fill in the chart for your chunk.  Be sure everyone is an expert on his or her assigned chunk.

9  I will put you into new groups, with a representative (or 2) from each chunk.  Take notes as the Chunk Representative presents his or her findings.  At the conclusion of this activity, you will have a fully completed flow map.

10  Explain how Yezaierska’s TONE changes throughout the story.
