2 His ideas 1984 Nobel Prize Man’s anarchic nature eventually caused the downfall of orderly society. Human beings constantly spoil their chance to make a good world, because the bad qualities in their nature overwhelm them. Man’s worst tendencies could be controlled by civilization but not changed.

3 Features of his writings 1.exploration of human nature; 2.use of allegories; 3.his stories set in strange locations or undefined time and place, thus emphasizing the timeless nature and universal significance.

4 Lord of the Files (1954) a modern allegory, in which a group of school boys are wrecked on a desert island: effects of civilization break down and they return to their essential animal nature.

5 Lord of the Files Two groups fight: one guards the fire (dreamers and poets, reason, civilization); the other hunts for food (men of action, irrationality, anarchic nature).
