PRESENTATION BY EVAN RIEKHOF
3
All of us are matter! We take up space and have mass.
4
Matter is Anything that has mass Mass- the measure of how much material makes up the object And has volume. Volume- the amount of space an object takes up MassVolume Matter
5
Matter exists in three states. Solids Liquids Gases
6
Matter exists in three states. Solids Anything that has definite volume Anything that has definite shape Examples: Cat Bricks Car
7
Matter exists in three states. Liquids Has volume Takes on shape of container. Examples Water Paint Gasoline
8
Gases Fills the entire volume of a container. Examples Carbon Monoxide Oxygen Helium
9
Matter has properties. Properties Something about an object that can be observed Size Shape Color Smell Sound Temperature
10
Matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms. Atoms- The smallest unit of matter. Atoms join together to form larger particles of matter. Oxygen is made up of just one kind of atom. Atoms join together to make different kinds of matter. Water has two kinds of atoms that join together.
11
Particles are different in different states of matter. In Solids Particles pull toward each other. Stay close together. Can’t change places. In Liquids Particles are farther apart than in solids. Pull between particles is weaker than solids. Move around each other and change places. In Gases Do not pull together strongly. Move around more freely. Move to fill any space.
12
Matter changes in two ways. Physical Change Changes in the size Changes in the shape Changes in the state of matter Example: Breaking glass Chemical Change Causes matter to become new kind of matter. Example: Rusting of iron
