3 E X. E. COLI LAC OPERON Allows bacteria to use lactose as food. 3 genes: 1. Promotor 1. Promotor – RNA Polymerase binds to begin transcription

4 2. Operator 2. Operator – Region to which a repressor binds to prevent transcription  Repressor  Repressor – protein that blocks transcription  When lactose is present, it binds to the repressor protein

5 3. Gene Protein 3. Gene Protein – When the repressor protein changes shape and falls off the operator, transcription of the gene is possible
