STAINLESS STEEL PIPES
2
WHAT IS STAINLESS STEEL TYPICAL PROPERTIES Stainless steels are alloys containing iron, relatively low carbon, a minimum 10.5% chromium and up to 30% nickel. Stainless steels pipe are grouped according to the structure which forms when they are cooled from high temperatures. stainless steel piping in a variety of grades including 304, 316, 317, 321, 309, and 346 as well as some 400 series grades. The type that is used in the marine environment is 316.

TYPE OF STAINLESS STEEL (PIPES) There are Four basic types of stainless steel: Duplex : high resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Austenitic: High ductility, good corrosion resistance, suitable for high and low temperatures. Ferritic: less expensive, can stand moderate high temperature. Martensitic: this type of stainless steel is used where high mechanical strength combined with corrosion resistance is required(e.g. marine pipes).

TYPE OF CORROSION Pitting and crevice corrosion to low grade stainless steel.

MARINE STAINLESS STEEL PIPE GRADE Where marine and aggressive environments are encountered, stainless grade 316/316L is commonly used in the construction of water supply services and buildings. Because 316/316L stainless resists rusting, it makes an excellent choice for Marine applications and aggressive environment such as sea-front buildings.
