Starter: Use the word sheet and write anything you know / guess about Bio fuel in the spider diagram (3 minutes)
Learning outcomes What is Biofuel? (easy) All How biofuels can be produced from plant materials? (medium) (most) Understand why biofuels may be better than fossil fuels? (hard) (Some) Advantages/Disadvantages of growing crops for biofuels? (harder) (Few)
Biofuels (Fuels from plants or animals) 3min (Use the keywords help sheet if you need) What is the meaning of the word ‘Fuel’ ? (easy) What is the meaning of the word ‘Bio’? (medium) What is a biofuel? Use the pictures to give you some ideas.(hard)
Self Assess: (green pen) What is the meaning of the word ‘Fuel’ ? (easy) material that is burned to produce energy (heat). What is the meaning of the word ‘Bio’? (medium) ‘Bio’ means life (plants or animals) What is a biofuel? Use the pictures to give you some ideas.(hard) Fuels from plants or animals NO HANDS UP QUESTIONS: Give some examples of fuels (from the experiment we have done before) Name 3 fossil fuels What gas is produced when you burn a fuel? (AP) Why it is bad if we burn too much of fossil fuels?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/biofu els/476.html Watch the video and discuss the following questions: (3-4 minutes) THINK PAIR SHARE 1)How is the biofuel made? (1min) 2)Why is it more environmentally friendly? (1min) 3)What is it currently being used for? (1min) 4)What are the advantages? (1 min)
Mini White board What is the source of Biofuel? Plants (vegetable oil. Animal fat) How did chip fat turned into useful fuel? Chemical reaction Cars powered by Petrol / diesel produce a gas- What gas is this? Carbon dioxide Cars powered by Biofuel also produce the same gas but who sucks it back? plants Carbon dioxide produced = Carbon dioxide taken back is this a good news or bad news? What is the special name given for this ? Good news; Carbon Neutral (AP) Why? What will happen if too much of Carbon dioxide is produced Global warming Why this is renewable? It doesn’t take millions years to grow the plants again
Biofuel Energy – energy from plants (Discuss 3 min) 1.Trees absorb the sun’s energy. The trees change this energy into chemical energy, which they store inside themselves. 2.When we burn wood, we turn this energy into heat, which is useful for cooking and heating. + Renewable – as long as we keep planting trees to replace the ones we cut down + Doesn’t need any special equipment, so it can be used very easily, even in poor countries + Doesn’t add to the global warming – Large areas of land are needed to grow enough trees The chemical potential energy stored in things that were once alive (e.g. trees) can be turned into heat energy by burning them. (We can also turn it into electrical energy to use in our homes.)
DEAR TIME (Drop Everything and Reflect) With a green pen add onto the spider diagram What do you know now? (5 min) 1)How is the biofuel made? 2)Why is it more environmentally friendly? 3)What is it currently being used for? 4)What are the advantages? 5)Any Disadvantages?
Peer assess using the success criteria : See if you can add anything Give 3 WWW and 1 EBI question Fuel can be made from cooking oil, animal fat and plants such as sunflowers. They are chemically converted into fuel. It doesn’t add any carbon dioxide to the environment so this is carbon neutral (environmentally friendly How the use of biodiesel would help with the fight against global warming and how more individual drivers and companies could be encouraged to switch to using biodiesel. Also consider the disadvantages of biodiesel production (using the land).
