1 Minds On… Provide the IUPAC and Classical Names for each of the following: PbO2 SnSO4 FeS Cu3(PO4)2 Multivalents

2 Nomenclature: Part III
LG: I can name acids and bases

3 Binary Acids Binary acids are composed of HYDROGEN and one other NON-METAL Classical Naming Rules Prefix ‘hydro’ and ‘ic’ ending are added to more electronegative atom Formula Classical Name IUPAC Name HF(aq) Hydrofluoric Acid Aqueous Hydrogen Fluoride HCl(aq) Hydrochloric Acid Aqueous Hydrogen Chloride H2S(aq) Hydrosulfuric Acid Aqueous Hydrogen Sulfide Aq = dissolved in water Named like ionic compounds

4 Oxyacids Oxyacids are a combination of hydrogen and oxyanions
IUPAC naming: aqueous hydrogen _oxyanion_ Ie. HClO3 = aqueous hydrogen chlorate Classical Naming: Name of Oxyanion Name of Oxyacid Example per - ate Per - ic SO52- -ate -ic SO42- -ite -ous SO32- hypo-ite hypo - ous SO22- Just write name of acid in example

5 Oxyacid Formulas Treated like an ionic compound
Include enough hydrogens to balance the charge on oxyanion Examples: Carbonic Acid Hypochlorous Acid

6 Bases Common bases include ionic hydroxides, carbonates, and bicarbonates, in solution (in solution = aqueous) Examples: KOH (potassium hydroxide) CaCO3 (calcium carbonate) NaHCO3 (sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate)

7 What do you notice about all of the acid formulas?
Practice Classify each compound as an acid or a base. Name each compound. For each acid include the IUPAC and Classical name. Na2CO3 H2SO4 H3PO4 Ca(HCO3)2 LiOH HClO HNO3 What do you notice about all of the acid formulas?

8 Happy March-Breaking! Homework Text: Handout: All Compounds!
Old book: Pg. 101 #24-27 Handout: All Compounds! Naming quiz after March Break – Tuesday Happy March-Breaking!
