2 What does the research say? To comprehend text without help, a student needs to understand about 95 percent of the words. (Peregoy and Boyle, 2008) Learning the variety of meaning and uses of a word…requires a great deal of exposure to the word used in various contexts. (Peregoy and Boyle, 2008) Learning a new word is a gradual process that depends of multiple exposures to the word over time. (Peregoy and Boyle, 2008)

3 Classroom Instruction that Works with English Language Learners by: Jane D. Hill and Kathleen M. Flynn This book connects instructional strategies in another book, Classroom Instruction That Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement by: Robert J. Marzano, Debra J. Pickering, & Jane E. Pollock, to instruction with ELL students. Strategies discussed: homework and practice, summarization and note taking, and use of nonlinguistic representations. Provided with each strategy: a summary of the research, detailed examples of how to modify the strategy for use with ELLs in mainstream classrooms, and teacher accounts of implementation.

10 Flip It Vocabulary Provide students with index cards One card for the word and another card for the definition and illustration Students complete cards for each of their vocabulary words throughout a year or unit Place cards face down and lay them out like the game Memory. Students “Flip It” to match the vocabulary word to the definition.
