1 Hunger in North Carolina By: Elisha Creef

2 There are several different organizations in North Carolina that deal with fixing the problem the problem of hunger. The Food Bank of NC has four programs. They are Kids Café which helps kids after school with nutritious foods and tutoring. The BackPack program is made for helping kids on weekends. The mobile food pantry reaches all the rural areas of NC and drives on a daily basis. The Summer Food program provides food for adults and children during the summer (“Food Bank Features”).

3 The food for thought program is a local program that is operated around the Outer Banks. In 2006, 30 million children across the United States had free or reduced lunches. The Food For Thought program helps with weekend food for kids which is where the problem because they get plenty of food at school (“food for thought”).

4 Nearly 50 million people last year dealt with hunger from the harsh economic times. About 1 in 4 children deal with hunger. The number of hungry children in the United States are increasing. About 16 percent of Americans ran out of good food to eat that was nutritious last year (The Washington Post: America's economic pain brings hunger pangs, Goldstein).
