Ray Sanchez 2013 Outstanding EX – The Start of Greatness Mr. Sanchez was A Sports Writer for the El Paso Herald Post from 1950 to 1990 High School Editor, Golf Editor, Racing Editor, Bowling Editor this made him the first Hispanic Sports Editor in El Paso After retiring from the Post he wrote a column for the El Paso Times and still writes today for the El Paso, Inc. Mr. Sanchez has covered the following: The Dallas Cowboys, Super Bowls, World Series, Kentucky Derbies, U.S Opens (Golf)

Ray Sanchez 2013 Outstanding EX – The stuff of Legend Mr. Sanchez has interviewed nationally known figures such as Willie Mays, Joe DiMaggio, Larry Bird, Tom Landry and Don Haskins. he has authored 6 books: “The Gods of Racing” “Don Haskins: the Bear Facts” “Basketball’s biggest Upset” “El Paso’s Greatest sports Heroes” ”Baseball: From Browns to Diablos” “The Miners: The history of Sports at The University of Texas of El Paso.”

Ray Sanchez 2013 Outstanding EX – Giving Back Mr. Sanchez was a: Charter member and member of the board of directors of the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame, the El Paso Baseball Hall of Fame, the El Paso Golf Hall of Fame and the El Paso Boxing Hall of Fame. Former president of the El Paso Baseball Hall of Fame. Former member of the UTEP Library Board. Past chairman of the program committee for the El Paso Downtown Lions Club. Past member of the El Paso County Golf Board.

7. Winner of UTEP’s most prestigious journalism award: “The Hicks-Middagh Award for Excellence in Journalism” in 1991. Inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978. Inducted into the El Paso Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989. Inducted into the El Paso High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985. Inducted into the El Paso Boxing/Karate Hall of Fame in 1993. Inducted into the El Paso Golf Hall of Fame in 1995. Recipient of the UTEP Gold Nugget Award which honors graduates “for their exceptional achievements and contributions to their professions, communities and UTEP” in 2011.

9. Ray Sanchez 2013 Outstanding EX – Truly an Outstanding Ex Consultant for movie “Glory Road.” UTEP coach Don Haskins said Ray Sanchez is totally responsible for the movie being made. Honored by City of El Paso with a Proclamation declaring Sept. 18, 2001, “Ray Sanchez Day “ for his valuable contributions to his hometown.”
