Living Things Interact Developed by Trent Voyles

Ecosystems All the living and nonliving things that interact with each other in an environment. Ecosystems include individuals, populations, and communities. In a healthy ecosystem, populations are interdependent.

Individuals and Populations A single organism in an environment is called an individual. Individuals of the same kind living in the same environment make up a population.

Community All the populations of organisms living together in an environment make up a community.

Habitat and Niche Habitat comes from the Latin verb meaning “to dwell.” An organism’s habitat is where it dwells or lives. A niche is a certain role that each population has in its habitat. Eagles and owls share the same habitat and food. Eagles hunt during the day and owls at night, different niches.

Limiting Factors Limiting factors include the following: Soil conditions Temperature Rainfall Number of Plants Amount of Food

Population Density Population density is the number of animals in a certain area. Limited resources, such as food, will affect the size of population that can live in a certain area.

Nonliving things that affect the organisms living in an ecosystem include weather, landforms, and – A. Habitat B. Niche C. Soil D. Population
