What Is Information Governance?
ARMA’s definition (2012) Information governance is a strategic framework comprised of standards, processes, roles, and metrics that holds organizations and individuals accountable to create, organize, secure, maintain, use, and dispose of information in ways that align with and contribute to the organization’s goals. This definition is similar to Gartner’s definition, but provides greater emphasis on the recordkeeping elements of information governance. Good recordkeeping is central to good information governance – you just can’t do it without good records and information management Information governance also brings more emphasis to two elements critical in today’s business world: Metrics – through information governance and the tools ARMA is developing for the profession (Information Governance Maturity Model, Information Governance Assessment product); we can measure information governance against standards and generally accepted principles that have been vetted by subject matter experts. Benchmarking – an organization using the metrics tools can benchmark their progress – an important element of demonstrating program credibility and program improvement Alignment with the organization’s goals – how does information governance help an organization achieve its main mission(s)?

How Does the IGP Fit? IGP at the center – integrates these various perspectives Expand your own knowledge base Work more effectively with these natural organizational allies Other credentials listed here are relevant to the practice of information governance. Note that the IGP is at the center of the action – the IGP professional is pulling together all the various perspectives and issues that need to be considered to achieve unified, effective information governance. We don’t expect an IGP to earn ALL of these credentials – but an individual may choose to expand their knowledge into related areas that they find of interest. And, we hope it’s a two-way street – maybe individuals who hold the other certifications will become interested in a broader view of IG and come to the IGP Certification Program to enhance their own careers.

Managing Information Risk and Compliance Developing Information Governance Strategic Plan Developing Information Governance Framework Establishing the Information Governance Program Establishing Information Governance Business Integration and Oversight Aligning Technology with the Information Governance Framework There are six domains that are covered on the exam. Not the same as the Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles – this is by design. The certification is focused on the ROLE an IGP should play in the organization. The Principles, the maturity model and various assessment methods are TOOLS the IGP would use in fulfilling the role. Other tools include national and international level standards, management tools such as cost benefit analyses, business case methodologies, budgeting, communication, etc.

The DACUM Chart Each domain is more fully described in the DACUM Chart (DACUM = Developing a Curriculum) In addition to defining tasks the IGP would do; it describes knowledge, skills, and tools or resources the IGP should be familiar with. This is a small excerpt – the full DACUM chart is on the IGP website.

Another Q&A One measure of an effective IG program is
reduction in storage footprint social media posts that attest the program improvement in employee morale testimonial and other communications This question gets at the importance of metrics in an IG program. The only answer that is tied specifically to how the program works is A. While individuals might feel good about the program (e.g., the social media posts, s and morale), you don’t know if it’s really working unless you have an objective, quantified measurement, such as reduction in storage footprint.
