2  Established in June 2011 Aim  To enable statutory and voluntary organizations to work in partnership to prevent and reduce incidents of Female Genital Mutilation in Greater Manchester

4 The aim of the research was to provide an understanding and scale of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Greater Manchester, and also to identify any gaps in data and highlight key sources of information that may be used to improve knowledge.

5 Greater Manchester is one of the 5 hotspots for FGM in the UK

7  Manchester has the greatest volume of births to African mothers and is clearly a key area where intervention is needed  Salford & Bolton had 2 nd Highest volume of births  Rochdale showing 3 rd Highest  Large increases in births to African mothers in Bury and Wigan (numbers lower than GT Manchester average)

8  2 reversals carried out per month at St Marys  More women seen in antenatal with Types 1 & 2 which do not require further surgical intervention  37 cases of FGM reported in 2010 by PAHT: ◦ The average age of women is 31 years, with a range of 23 – 41 years. ◦ The majority of women were born in Africa ◦ North Manchester General Hospital saw the majority of patients.

11  Raised the profile of FGM  Commissioned a GM prevalence report  Developed and trained 20 trainers across the region to deliver FGM training  Developed GM wide Safeguarding Protocol  Developed E-learning training package  Oldham and Wigan deliver regular FGM training sessions

12  Working closely with frontline community groups supporting victims of FGM (AFRUCA, BSCA, NESTAC,)  Developed leaflets for professionals  School Mapping  Training Mapping  Supported a community Local Radio station to develop a FGM project

13  Engaging with faith leaders  Developing a GM wide strategy  Developing a education resource  Publicity campaign  Roll out of further training
