Trustworthy repository criteria, virtual organizations, and infrastructure Chronopolis

Current Chronopolis state SRB/iRODS based, geographically dispersed preservation system Perform fixity checking on regular basis for all objects in the system Moving towards more “open” tools (e.g. BagIt) in defining process Currently have ~25TB under management

Two big pushes Auditable processes: full TRAC assessment – Starting … NOW Partnerships: active collaborations – MetaArchive (several areas) – … others coming

TRAC – Being conducted by CRL Self assessment being done now – Completed in early 2011 – An opportunity not just for assessment but for development Improves common language Helps with long-term planning

Collaborations MetaArchive – Management discussions – Technology sharing (iRODS and LOCKSS) – Grants and projects Others coming…

Collaborations … (TRAC fueled) Help: safety of bits, avoid technology blinders, development and planning, sustainability Complications: safety of objects (?), data ownership, sustainability

What is Trust? Transparency – organizationally, grants and planning, collaboration rather than collabetition Common language on objects and infrastructure

Policy and evaluation Policies: what parts of the infrastructure affect how bits are treated; what impact do the content contributors have? Assessment of collaboration should be driven by the practical, not only the theoretical.
