2 In school day (core curriculum) Pacific Ridge School Campus Stewardship Project  Recycling auditing/setup/maintenance  Worm bin setup/maintenance (food composting)  Designed and constructed athletic equipment storage box, garden equipment storage shed, and field-side benches  Designed and planted PRS garden (using worm compost) Elementary School Outreach Project  Formed partnership with local elementary school  Performed recycling/trash audit  Educating students on basics of recycling  Implementing school-wide recycling plan Project Green  Partner with regional restaurant chain for the purpose of helping them ‘go green’  Analyzing customer survey data

4 Elective class in school day Playground Design for Elementary School  Students visited the site and met with the school Principal and District Facilities Directors to determine needs and restrictions  Students studied safety requirements  Students researched playgrounds, equipment, and materials  Students worked in teams to design playground layouts  A design review was held and corporate mentors and other experts engaged helped to determine the best design moving forward  School is now working to raise the funds to purchase the equipment and complete the installment of the playground

5 In school day (core curriculum) Greenhouse Project  Design and built greenhouse  Designed and implemented irrigation system for and heated floor system for greenhouse  Use greenhouse for elementary/middle school tours  Vegetables grown are transplanted to local community garden other plants sold  Earth Day activities highlight schools projects and alternative energies

6 Elective within the school and after school Projects Underway in 3 Areas: Bioengineering: Aquaponics Tank in Harlem Senior Center Environmental Engineering: Design water quality sampling station for the East River Robotics: High school students are using their robotics program to work with middle and elementary age students in a mentoring program In Addition: Developing a system for students to partner with elementary school teachers and create projects to help them teach science The Frederick Douglass Academy

7 In school day (core curriculum) Project: Wastewater diversion “green” field maintenance project Project Overview Use, up to now, discarded Department of Public Works water treatment plant, filter rinse water to:  Irrigate community & school ball fields  Establish school based experimental garden  Establish school based experimental aquaculture program to raise and release indigenous fish species in 2 local waterways  collect, refine and correlate learning objectives for subprojects listed above

8 Seniors participate in semester long program (Core Curriculum) Projects:  Recyclable materials storage unit  Portable raptor cage  Custom stage stairs for animals  Light writer pendulum  Ball return system for a gravity well  Mobil art cart  Adaptive eating tray  Bobcat climbing structure  Custom sports equipment rack  Climbing tree structure 25 projects delivered to date with over 5000 people estimated to be positively effected Raptor Cage Motorized Copy Holder

9 Currently a 2 week summer program STARS Leadership Summer Summit:  Students apply to take part in free program  Combines students from all over the city  Environmental project focus  Mentoring by university students  Begin by learning fundamentals of engineering (EPICS High Curriculum!)

10 Elective within the school and after school Project: Portable exhibit for local science museum  Focused on building green exhibits Project: Green Technologies  Using thermal imaging to conduct energy audits of low income houses  Constructing insulation out of recycled materials  Incorporating green technologies for the middle school

11 Elective class offered in Engineering Academy Project: Recycling Project  Started as school-wide initiative  Used as educational tool – students presented on recycling to middle and elementary schools  School corporation now adopting the recycling program Project: Electric Car  Lots of community and business collaborations sponsoring and providing materials  Using old car that as been sitting in school’s shop area  Students working to convert from gas to electric

12 In school day (core curriculum) Project: Community Holiday Lights Display  Students Designed and built large outdoor drive-thru community light display  Computerized music to lights  People tune into light display music on radio station Project: Local Non-Profit Office Design  Local non-profit was given office space by city and students are designing the office layout – other projects are expected to follow with this agency

13 Elective within the school and after school Project: Mobile Alternative Energies Classroom  Travels to public events as well as to elementary and middle schools to teach people about alternative energies.

14 Elective within the school day Project: Green Roof Project  Portable green roof cart to use for presentations to high school, elementary and middle school students  Students can take green roof elective course where students learn the importance of green roofs  Large green roof project on Tufts campus building nearby  Students also can take part through Student Life Cub during school hours Project: Recycling Project  Recycling project to be used on school campus  Recycling bin prototype has been developed and is currently being tested at school

15 Elective within the school day Project: JW House Play Structure  Students visit with client and research needs, safety requirements, and designs  Students create model designs and present  Final design determined  Students build structure Project: Solar Lighting Project  School campus project to utilize solar lighting for sports fields  In research phase – also working with local experts
