Results from Young People’s playground questionnaire Presented to Appleton with Eaton Parish Council by Appleton Playground & Recreation Area Group 7 th December 2009

Background/Methodology The survey was designed by the Appleton Playground & Recreation Area Group in response to a request by the Appleton with Eaton Parish Council It aims to supplement the findings from the playground section in the Community Plan questionnaire The surveys were distributed alongside the Community Plan questionnaires between 21 st October and 4 th November 2009 Young people in all Appleton and Eaton households were invited to complete a survey covering a range of issues such as: –Playgrounds normally visited –Likes/dislikes of those playgrounds –Frequency of use of proposed new Appleton playground –Reasons for use –Desired equipment choices –Importance of various design aspects –Importance of bike bars

Summary of the findings Engagement The findings demonstrate strong support for the provision of an Appleton playground/recreation area Frequency of use A central playground would not only be used regularly but would encourage greater use than at current therefore promoting a healthier more active lifestyle Location It is important that the playground is located within walking/cycling distance to reduce the need for parking and cut down on existing journeys which are a current frustration Environmental aspects The young people want their playground to be designed with natural materials, and include litter/recycling bins so it is in keeping with the local environment There’s strong support for a playground in the heart of the village to encourage active play for young people in an environmentally friendly way

128 young people responded from 70 families, with a good mix of ages represented

Overall there’s strong support for natural active play

And in their own words… “In keeping with local environment” “Want to be able to go not only when mum and dad are free to take me” “I just want a place to play without having to get in the car” “Just a lovely safe play area” “Something for all ages”

Next steps What we’d like from you tonight: –Vote of support from Parish Council –Enables us to apply for grants –Official body for site negotiations –Supporting fundraising in the village –Request for 2 PC members to join us in a sub-committee Next steps: –Formal negotiations to secure site –Draw up outline plans –Planning application –Detailed park design –Fundraising / Grant applications –Build it!
