Fourth Grade CCSS Content Topic March Geometry Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties. Math Practice #7 – Look for and Make Use of Structure

Geometry - Standard 2 Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.

The students in Mrs. Miller’s 4 th grade class share the playground shown below. The girls and boys decide to split the playground equally. The boys label their section with the letter B. 10 yards Part 1 - What is the area of the girls’ playground? Part 2 – Name the shape of the boys’ playground using all the geometric terms that apply. Part 3 - Suppose the playground is separated into 2 congruent triangles. What type of triangles are formed? 20 yards Highlighted Problem

20 yards 10 yards What is the area of the girls’ playground? Part 1 Area = Base X Height

20 yards 10 yards What is the area of the girls’ playground? WX ZY VU Part 1 Area = Base X Height

20 yards 10 yards What is the area of the girls’ playground? WX ZY VU Part 1 Area = Base X Height

20 yards 10 yards What is the area of the girls’ playground? WX ZY VU Part 1 20 yards Area = 20 X Height

20 yards 10 yards The students in Mrs. Miller’s 4 th grade class share the playground shown below. The girls and boys decide to split the playground equally. The boys label their section with the letter B. WX ZY VU Part 1 20 yards Area = 20 X 5 5 yards

The students in Mrs. Miller’s 4 th grade class share the playground shown below. The girls and boys decide to split the playground equally. The boys label their section with the letter B. Part 1 20 yards Area = 20 X 5 or 100 square yards 5 yards

Name the shape of the boys’ playground using all the geometric terms that apply. PART 2 1 4 3 2 The boys’ playground is a polygon, a quadrilateral, a parallelogram and a rectangle.

Suppose the playground is separated into 2 congruent triangles. What type of triangles are formed? PART 3 Right triangles are formed
