3 Diary Entry-1 st of May We are relied from the firing line-the battle still raging; every nerve strained. Australians have done splendidly, holding a very difficult position; have been much troubled with snipers. I am glad I have done my duty. First wash for a week – go down to the water hole, which is always covered with Turkish snipers- it was safer in trenches than here- all around this spot are dead and wounded who have been hit dodging around this corner; however, one must drink, even if the price is DEATH. Make dug-outs in our rest camp; but men are continually caught by the snipers. Many are commencing to suffer from dysentery, though the spirit is splendid always ready for a joke. Signaller Walker just got hit in the mouth- we considered we were out of range in our drug out but the snipers are everywhere. Sargent of the machine gun is writing a very amusing diary- wish I had his spirit Ellis Silas We are relied from the firing line-the battle still raging; every nerve strained. 4 Germany/Britain End of War During 1917 the German military hoped to force Britain hand with increased U-boat attacks on ships bound for Britain but the British were prepared to fight on, and they and French launched another offensive that began in April. Fighting also broke out again around Pyres, Belgium in July. In both places Germans were once again able to keep the enemy from capturing much territory, though they paid a high price. In fighting along the Asian River, the Germans had 168,00 casualties and at Pyres the number 260,000. Germany gave up and had too pay for the damage.
