A little history on Wikitude.me  Developed by Mobilizy GmbH, Wikitude.me is a “points of interest” service mobile platform that uses the same kind of tools that power Wikipedia and was the first Augmented Reality browser to hit the market  It focuses on providing information about where the user is located  The browser uses information from over 800,000 points of interest available on Wikipedia

How does Wikitude work?  Artificial or digital information can be overlaid on physical objects or places, making the information surrounding the user interactive and digitally usable  Users can point their smart phone camera at any site of interest and immediately receive information, such as names and height or mountains on the screen  Geo-tag (users can share content with other users around the world) How do you think the data input from the users will affect Wikitude.me?

Competitors Some of Wikitude.me competitors are as follows:  Layar  Slifter  ShopSavvy

Layar  Layar, is a mobile augmented reality browser, created by SPRX Mobile product (Dutch Company)  Launched first in The Netherlands  Application automatically starts with smart phone.  The embedded GPS automatically knows the location of the phone and provides local information about commercial partners  Local firms (restaurants, theaters, financial service, and business looking for employees) pay fees to be able to display their information

Slifter  Slifter is a location based local product search tool  It could be accessed through their website or on your mobile phone e.g. Blackberry and iPhone  Slifter is based on the premise that most of the shopping that takes place in America are in local stores e.g. Sears, Best buy, Toys “R” Us  Slifter tells you where you can find products including the price, if it’s in stock, product details, special promotions and maps  Retailers have to list their products on Slifter and there is no charge for the service  Slifter does not sell products

ShopSavvy  ShopSavvy is an application for Android-powered mobile phones written by a company called Big in Japan  This application uses the camera on your mobile phone to scan the barcode from an item and compares them to other items to show you the lowest price available in stores and online  It also shows the reviews of the item and it also gives the directions, phone number and website of the merchant

Conclusion  Mobilizy and Wikitude are in developing stage and have not exploited the commercial application.  Mobile platform is becoming more popular and by 2013 it is expected to generate about 7% of all B2C e- commerce.
