Smoking: A pleasure which kills…

Chemical substances contained in cigarette.  Nicotine  Pitch  Carbon dioxide  Carbon monoxide  Heterocyclic hydrocarbons  Polyaromatic hydrocarbons  Radioactive elements  Aldehyds  Cancerigenic compounds

Diseases that smoking can cause.  Cancer (skin, stomach, oral cavity, respiratory system, alimentary canal.)  Loss of hair  Cataract  Loss of hearing  Ageing of skin  Defected teeth  Emphysema of lungs  Osteoporosis  Heart problems  Stomach ulcer  Discoloration of fingers  Psoriasis  Burger disease

The way nicotine affects some of the above damages.  Heart problems → Nicotine makes vessels narrower and causes emission of hormones.  Breathing difficulties → nicotine contains carbon monoxide, which is more convenient to be united with the blood’s haimoglobene than oxygen.  Cancer of oral cavity → genitival modification of the mouth’s, throat’s or gums’ cells.

Smoking and statistics.  33% of the students in the High Senior School have smoked for at least once and 20, 8% in High Senior School and Junior High School, smoke systematically.  64% of the students smoke for reasons of showing off, 60% because of their character’s weakness and only 25% because they think of cigarette as a symbol of maturity.  Smoking is responsible for the 30% of the cancers that people suffer from and for the 85% of the lung cancers.  Finally, smoking is responsible for 3.500.000 deaths every year globally, or, in other words for 10.000 deaths every day!!!

Passive smoking.  Passive smoking → the procedure during which a non- smoker inhales all the smog of a smoker.  3.000 people die every year only in Greece because of the passive smoking.  Only a 15% of the smog is inhaled by the smoker. The rest 85% fills up the room and is inhaled by the other people that stay in it.

Smoking and sports.  Smoking makes exercise harder than it is and causes many difficulties to athletes.  Also, smoking does not suit to what sports represent.

 Stop smoking, or not starting this, is very important for our health, as we don’t want to be like this:

Or these:
