5 Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
VADIR Training 2011 4/16/2017 Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) This law amends the New York Education Law to prohibit harassment against students in school, including harassment based on real or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender (including gender identity and expression) and sex, and to prohibit discrimination based on these same characteristics. The prohibition would apply to all public schools in the state. Effective July 1, 2012 Implications for Codes of Conduct & VADIR -Data driven -Work groups currently producing guidance/Q&As -Presentations to come -Reporting under these categories -includes student to student and adult to student

6 Use of Data Data triangulation Data monitoring Feedback Loop
VADIR Training 2011 4/16/2017 Use of Data Data triangulation Data monitoring Feedback Loop Data-driven decisions Pose question to group: How do you use school violence data? (Click again to get the bullets.) -examples of triangulation are attendance/truancy/academics – how do elements inter-relate -consider a system to identify special populations -consider a system for making changes -monitor at set frequencies – periodic -share the data with appropriate staff -How do we know our strategies are working? -What factors are you monitoring? (climate - location/time/population/most prevalent categories – 9/10/20, etc.)

7 School Violence Index (SVI)
VADIR Training 2011 4/16/2017 School Violence Index (SVI) Incident Category Weight 1. Homicide 100 2.1 Forcible Sex Offenses 60 2.2 Other Sex Offenses 45 3. Robbery 4. Assault with Serious Injury 40 5. Arson 6. Kidnapping 7. Assault with Physical Injury 30 8. Reckless Endangerment 25 *All other incident categories involving the use of a weapon (9w, 10w, 11w, 12w, 13w, 16w) 17.1, 17.2 Weapons Possession Only 15 Assigned Weights to Incident Categories Used to compute the School Violence Index (SVI) for schools. Weighted incidents are totaled and then divided by the school enrollment. (Two Category 5’s: = 60; 60 divided by enrollment) School could be identified as PD for the school year if, for both and , it had either: An SVI of 1.5 or greater Or At least 60 serious incidents and an SVI of at least 0.50.

8 Calculating Your SVI (School Violence Index)
VADIR Training 2011 Calculating Your SVI (School Violence Index) 4/16/2017 SVI Calculation for Educationville Middle School Enrollment = 400 What is the SVI? (Category Weight)*(No. of Incidents)=(SVI Points per Category) Add SVI Points for all Categories. (Total SVI Points)/Enrollment=SVI Answer: 1.35 Category Description No. of Incidents 1 Homicide (100) 2.1 Forcible Sex (60) 2.2 Other Sex (45) 2 3 Robbery (40) 4 Assault w/ Serious Physical Injury (40) 5 Arson (30) 6 Kidnapping (30) 7 Assault w/ Physical Injury (30) 8 Reckless Endangerment (25) 9 Minor Altercation: Contact, no injury (0, 25 w/weapon) 28 10 Intim., Harass., Menacing and Bullying (0, 25 w/weapon) 21 11 Burglary (0, 25 w/weapon) 12 Criminal Mischief (0, 25 w/weapon) 13 Larceny or other Theft Offenses (0, 25 w/weapon) 1 (with weapon) 14 Bomb Threat (0) 15 False Alarm (0) 16 Riot (0, 25 w/weapon) 17.1 Weapons Possession (confiscated/entry screening) (15) 17.2 Weapons Possession (found/other circumstances) (15) 18 Use, Possession or Sale of Drugs (0) 19 Use, Possession or Sale of Alcohol (0) 20 Other Disruptive Incidents (0) 25 Class example to practice calculation – click twice to get answer

9 IRP: Planning Tool for Positive Climate
VADIR Training 2011 4/16/2017 IRP: Planning Tool for Positive Climate Proposed Action(s): State program or specific act to be accomplished Desired Result(s): Ideal outcome (i.e. 80% reduction in bullying in comparison to last year) Evaluation Strategy: How do you know program is effective? Focus groups, interviews, surveys, etc. Timeline: Span of program/activity implementation (i.e. September 2010-June 2011) IRP is blueprint for all major programs/activities aimed at creating a safe and drug free atmosphere at the building level

10 Suggestions for Improving School Climate
VADIR Training 2011 4/16/2017 Suggestions for Improving School Climate Develop a systems approach to improving school climate. Incorporate Social and Emotional Development and Learning into your overall plan. Equitably enforce a Code of Conduct for the district and building (Education Law-Chapter 16, Title II, Article 55 § Codes of conduct on school property). Develop district safety plans and building emergency response plans to deal with serious situations and conduct drills, tabletops and functional exercises to increase the level of preparedness. Personalize the school environment. Analyze Violent and Disruptive Incident Reports (VADIR) and other conduct data to provide information regarding pockets of concern that require attention and program strengths that could be replicated. Implement programs and activities that have a proven track record of achieving positive results; Evaluate programs periodically for their effectiveness and potential improvement. Actively involve and engage parents and other community members in addressing issues and concerns. Make sure students, teachers, parents, administrators, and other school staff are aware of warning signs of violence and the need to communicate that to others. -Early identification or interventions All students should be treated the same. Staff should be role models for behaviors. Breaking ranks II offers a number of suggestions for personalizing the environment: Creating smaller units in which anonymity is banished; Limit the number of students for each teacher to 90; develop a personal plan for progress for each student-reviewed frequently with student input; personal adult advocate for each student; staff will communicate a sense of caring and respect; create flexible scheduling and student grouping patterns that will allow better use of time to meet students needs; advocate and model a set of core values essential in a democratic and civil society; work with CBO’s to provide a wide range of physical and mental health services. Study and analyze the data-seek solutions 10
