Dave Krause ANRCS Web Action Team

 Data is collected from a web site based on what the user does during the visit.

 This data is converted into graphs, charts and tables by a “log analyzer.”

 The rendered data is viewed by the web content managers.

 If all went well, the data helps you determine which aspects of the website work towards your web objectives!

 There are three basic terms you will hear regarding Web site statistics. 1. Hit 2. Page View 3. Visit / Session

 Hit - A request for a file from the web server. The number of hits received by a website is frequently cited to assert its popularity, but this number is extremely misleading and dramatically over- estimates popularity.

 Page View - A request for a file whose type is defined as a page in log analysis. A single page view may generate multiple hits.

 Visit / Session - A series of requests from the same uniquely identified client with a set timeout. A visit is expected to contain multiple hits (in log analysis) and page views.
