Quote blending, proper citations, and everything else to prepare you for the writing of your paper! TAKE NOTES. THIS WILL HELP YOU WITH YOUR NEXT STEPS.

Next steps: Progress Checks are all done! YAY Your next assignment, which is due next Friday, is an outline I will give you an outline and graphic organizer for this

BUT! FIRST! We have to ensure that you know how to properly cite, blend quotes, and even make a decent and effective outline

1) Citations Let’s start with color coding each source you have. Spend the next five-ten minutes highlighting all 6 sources in different colors Also highlight important quotes from your interviews that you will use

1) Citations continued Now, look at your Works Cited page Whatever is listed first for each source on your WC page is how you cite this source FOR EXAMPLE…

Example with an author… Author stated: – Doe, John. “How to Get an ‘A’” John Doe states that : “………………” (PAGE NUMBER if it’s a book) “………………….” (Doe). NOTICE THE QUOTE WITHIN A QUOTE: “ ‘….’ “

No Author: – “How to Get an ‘A.’” www.notes.org.www.notes.org In the article “How to Get an ‘A’” the author states, “………………….” or It is stated that “………………..” (“How to Get an ‘A’”).

Let’s Practice 1) Smith, John. "Steelers win Super Bowl XLIII." Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 2 Feb. 2009: 4- 6. Print. 2) "Obama inaugurated as President." Time 21 Jan. 2009: 21-23. LexisNexis. Web. 1 Feb. 2009. www.bibme.org <-USE THIS IF LOST www.bibme.org

Now that you know how to properly cite something… Let’s discuss what requires quotes and what is paraphrasing **this is extremely important. If you use quotes incorrectly or do not properly paraphrase, THIS IS CONSIDERED PLAGARISM and results in an “F”

2) Quotes VS. Paraphrasing Quotes are WORD FOR WORD and MUST BE CITED. Let’s look at an article: – http://www.aspca.org/about-us/faq/pet- statistics.aspx

2) Quotes Quote anything that you NEED to say WORD FOR WORD (for example, statistics). Your quotes cannot be longer than three lines

Quote example For example, the one example is stated as followed: “Approximately 5 million to 7 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized (60 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats). Shelter intakes are about evenly divided between those animals relinquished by owners and those picked up by animal control. These are national estimates; the percentage of euthanasia may vary from state to state”

Interruption: MY CUTE PREVIOUS SHELTER DOGS

Quote Let’s say I want to quote this, but it’s longer than three lines. “ Approximately 5 million to 7 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized “ I would put something like: – Although many dogs are adopted every year, it is stated that “5 million to 7 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year” (“Pet Statistics”)

Quotes You practice: The average cost of basic food, supplies, medical care and training for a dog or cat is $600 to $900 annually. Seventy-eight percent of pet dogs and 88 percent of pet cats are spayed or neutered. (Source: “Pet Statistics”)

Paraphrasing is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT YOU CANNOT CANNOT CANNOT CANNOT CANNOT CHANGE ONE OR TWO WORDS AND CALL THIS PARAPHRASING You must read the ENTIRE paragraph, page, or article and THEN PUT IT ALL IN YOUR OWN WORDS

For example: “Small breeds of dogs—those weigh 20 pounds or less at maturity—reach mature body weight in nine to twelve months. As puppies, they can be fed free-choice. When food is readily available, most small-breed dogs will develop good eating habits and not become overweight. However, if you have other pets, you should probably feed your small-breed dog by the portion control method.” Paraphrased: – It is mentioned that small dogs should have good eating habits so as to not get overweight and be fed with portion control (“Feeding Your Puppy”). <-IT IS STILL CITED!!!

You try! 1) Get yourself a toothbrush made especially for canines or a clean piece of soft gauze to wrap around your finger. Ask your vet for a toothpaste made especially for canines or make a paste out of baking soda and water (“Pet Tips”).

Example #2 2) Be careful with this one…if you use the EXACT SENTENCE WITH A STATISTIC, IT IS NOT PARAPHRASED Puppies often play with their food when it is first introduced, but they will quickly learn what to do with it! By the time the pups are completely weaned at seven to eight weeks old, they should be eating their dry food consistently (“Pet Tips”)

3) Quote blending Most of you are already awesome with this, but let’s just remind ourselves what that looks like Begins with your own words + quote+ citation

Example: Let’s say the quote is “everybody loves to read” in a book written by John Doe. – 1) It was obvious that “everybody loves to read” (Doe). – 2) If I wanted to make it a different tense or change something, it looks like this: It was obvious that “everybody (loved) to read”(Doe).

4) A Few Reminders - you must react to your quotes (ie: YOU CANNOT END A PARAGRAPH WITH A QUOTE) You can use “I” in this paper because it’s an I- Search- it’s based on your opinions or reactions

5) Now. let’s get started on your outlines Let’s look over the graphic organizers and worksheets Start by splitting up your info into 5 (or more) paragraphs, INCLUDING AN INTRO AND CONCLUSION. Include bullet points with quotes, sections, and reactions 1. Intro 2. Shelter Animals 3. Becoming an Activist 4. How to Save Pets 5. Conclusion
